Wherever you are right now, BANG, a magic wand just appeared in your hand. One wave and IUBB's problems will be fixed, but you need to tell the wand what to fix. What's your gameplan?

Hire a new head coach. That knows how to win without excuses which means he has a personality , confidence , experience and drive.  Sorry but nice doesn't always get it done.

The easy one would just have the biggest NIL spend in basketball. Absent that, hire May or McCollum. But anything realistic, hmmm, back to more NIL, lol.

Maybe pack the house with fans?

Recruits seeing a great environment will help. Not booing the team off the court at halftime.

1. Hire McCollum.

2. Give IU bball the most NIL money.

3. Give McCollum the desire to use that money to recruit NBA ready talent, that fits his program and philosophies.

Time will tell if he chooses, or is able to recruit NBA caliber kids to Iowa.  He either didn't his first year at Iowa, or he wasn't able to land any.  Either way, as good a coach as he obviously is, he won't be able to compete for Natty's without it.  Give him a handful of NBA guys, that will play how he wants them to, and he'd be a HUGE problem for the rest of college basketball.

Some of the rumors about the meeting/meetings that Dolson had with McCollum, elude to McCollum's approach with recruiting specific kinds of players, and what IU wanted to become, not jiving.  And that CDD, while probably already in the fold, was seen as a guy that was going to be more active and willing to bring in NBA ready players.

Its certainly not working out yet.  But I'm willing to see what CDD focuses on, and brings in, in offseason number 2... when he has an entire staff established, and has 3-4, or more, guys returning, and can maybe focus on some higher dollar guys at key positions, rather than needing to build an entire roster.

McCollum is a better basketball coach than CDD.  I don't think its been determined yet that he'll have more success at the high P4 level.

May over McCollum all day, every day.

@surjay I think I agree with that, now.  But if McCollum starts to bring in guys like Landeborg... I think McCollum, long run, will be better.  But until he does it, its also very possible he ends up more like Bo Ryan...  I spent too much time on the last site fighting with Purdue fans about how I'd rather have a coach that tries to lure NBA level talent, so there's at least a reasonable chance at getting Natty number 6... than having a "system" coach, like Bo Ryan, or maybe even Painter, that rarely have NBA levels of talent, and thusly, really never have legit chances to win Natty's.

So... yeah, at IU... as of now... It seems like I'd prefer May over McCollum.  I think McCollum is a better pure basketball coach, but May brings in NBA talent, and is a good overall coach.  That combo is what wins Nattys.

That would be nice Woodson was nothing but a walking excuse machine. And I am honestly tired of hearing about how he did not have his staff hired in time for the portal. That is 100% on him as the coach and he did not do it. Excuses are for losers that is why you never hear guys like cig making excuses.

McCollum is going to have to do a lot more than beat this current IU team. His resume this season isn't nothing special.

May was in the S16 last year, has been to a FF before and has a top 4 team going this year with recruiting going great.  There's no comparison right now at this level.

Iowa will probably make the tourney this year their next five games are all games they could or should  win. I would still take May though but of course we messed that one up as well.

I would guess those are rare. System coaches need the buy in, and players need time in system where thinking is replaced by habit. They have to be smart. Pro level NBA talent in the NCAA is generally based on future  potential, they don't stick around, so, they don't build program consistency. Once in a while to fill in a spot is best. Never to lead a team...

He's more Bo Ryan/Painter like I'd assume... Recruit smart basketball players without the NBA measurables. Develop pro level players in program every so often.

Also, until he has a D1 team not led my one of the best PGs in the country, I'm still in wait and see mode. I've seen this show before, it doesn't always work out. They looked good against Purdue, Iowa St and a poor IU team, when considering lack of talent. Not so much against Minnesota.

The exact same set of facts was true of Tom Crean on this date in 2013.  Within months, some fans were ready to fire him.

This is why we can't have nice things.
