@arioznahoosier4554 I DO NOT think he hired him based off that tournament.  I just think DeVries put himself squarely on Dolson's radar... and Woodson gave Dolson reason to start actively start looking around, at the same tournament.  I think the timing, and coincidence of IU and WVU both being at that tournament could have led to CDD being vetted, and communicated with, earlier than McCollum was.  And then the timing at the end of the season sealed it.

We will see how it works out but so far compared to the other new hires of Ben M and Medved he certainly does not stand out as being better than them. Throw is all the elite big ten coaches painter, izzo, gard, may, and Underwood getting into the top five of the big ten is going to be very difficult. I mean some will say it is a just a talent issue but some first year coaches did very well this year so not sure its just a talent issue.

@iugradman I'll admit to Purdue being a good basketball program of late, and Painter is a decent coach. But I'll never root for them. I've had random PU fans do their "IU Sucks" call out at me when I'm walking down the street minding my own business wearing an IU shirt. So yeah, they don't deserve any support from IU fans. Do I do anything like that to fans wearing PU gear? No. Do Butler fans do that? No. Do Valpo fans do that? No. And I'll root for those teams if they are in the tournament. But not Purdue.

And Fairleigh Dickinson will always be one of the funniest things I ever saw in my life.

@arioznahoosier4554 100% speculation on my part...  In the Bahamas, he saw how our team struggled, and likely knew moving on Woodson was a very real possibility.  He also had an opportunity to see, first hand, DeVries WVU team.  Tucker played very well in that event, and WVU showed very well, too.  I'm sure DeVries made an impression on Dolson down there.  As the season started to swirl the drain, I'm sure Dolson reached out to DeVries people, and mutual interest was established.  McCollum wasn't really on everyone's radar until well in to last season.  Drake did beat Miami and Vanderbilt, early on in the season.  And I'm sure Dolson was well aware of McCollum, even before the season began.  But McCollum didn't go "viral" until well past the holidays, with Drake's undefeated season starting to gain attention.  It was THEN that most people started digging in to McCollum, realized what a stud resume he had... I have to think at some point near the end of the sesaon, Dolson probably had heard enough about McCollum that he reached out to his team.  Maybe McCollum's team knew they had already reached out to CDD's team, maybe not?  IU's season ended the same time WVU's ended... and Drake still had a week left in their season, being in the NCAA tournament.  CDD was officially hired March 18th... I doubt McCollum really had much of an interview, as CDD was hired before Drake played their first NCAA tournament game.

In short, the time frames doesn't really support there being any actual interviews with McCollum.  CDD had an idea on his man since Bahamas, and that all came together quickly after IU/WVU's seasons were over.  I feel pretty strongly that it would have went differently had Dolson focused on McCollum primarily.  DeVries would be at Iowa right now.  And if we hadn't gotten McCollum, we'd have had to get someone else.

The bahamas trip was very early in the season if he based the hire off of that boy is all I can say. We all know many teams  struggle early on and take awhile to get cooking so early season success does not mean much imo. Yeah I mean DD may have looked good in a very early season tourney but what did he finish in conference like 10-10? Sounds to me like Dolson simply had tunnel vision.

Yeah in Crean's last season we beat Kansas and then eventual national title winner UNC and were ranked #3.  Then the wheels came off and we didn't sniff the NIT.  If Dolson hired DeVries simply based off the Bahamas then god help us.

The play for the game winning shot reminded me a bit of the Wat Shot.

I forgot about that I had pretty much zoned out Crean's last season.

I don't root for PU,but that last second tip in by Kaufman Renn was pretty cool.

While I regarded God as a tyrant I thought my sin a trifle; But when I knew Him to be my Father, then I mourned that I could ever have kicked against Him. When I thought God was hard, I found it easy to sin; but when I found God so kind, so good, so overflowing with compassion, I smote upon my breast to think that I could ever have rebelled against One who loved me so, and sought my good.” C. H. Spurgeon

I was watching that on TV, and what I remember most about that final possession is Daryl Thomas got the ball and threw a pump fake and I yelled at the TV, 'don't shoot!' . I think maybe everybody touched it before Smart. Alford did a little couple step drive trying to draw a foul, then dished. But anyway, why I remember it is talking to a fellow Hoosier fan later and told him I actually said 'don't shoot, at Thomas not to take that last shot, he said "I did too!" ... LOL Nothing against Thomas, he was a fine player. We did not want him putting that one up...

If DeVries was hired simply based on the Bahamas tournament, the decision would be in line with the many other stupid ones Indiana has made with the basketball program over the last 30 years. Dolson should also hand back his athletic director of the year award.

I know IU isn't in it and this thread isn't to pour salt in the would. The NCAA Tournament is one of the best events in sports, so I 'll still be watching. Let's enjoy it together. Post thoughts on games, share your upset picks, brackets etc.

PS There are other threads to use to complain about IUBB, this is to enjoy March Madness.

My son has tickets, so I will be attending.  I went to one FF game before....when Florida beat UCLA in Indy.  That was kind of a dud game for non-fans of either team.

Articles I've read indicate Illinois fans will dominate the crowd ala IU fans at the Rose & Peach Bowls and in Miami.  Michigan fans will be a distance 2nd, AZ almost as many, with U Conn having the fewest.  I think the crowd dynamic will have an effect.  In a totally neutral site I think Michigan-AZ and UConn-Illinois would both be pick em games, with a very slight edge going to Michigan & U Conn.  U Conn simply because their coach, although creepy & weird, does seem to find a way to win the big ones.  So....with no crowd effect I'd put the possibilities of a NC at about 36% each for Michigan & AZ, and 14% each for U Conn & Illinois.  With the crowd effect, I'd favor Illinois slightly and increase their chance of a NC by a couple of points.

What do you guys think will happen?

The replies on page 10 are not working (seems to be a bug). You can reply on every other page and I will try to push it to page 11.

If any one is down in Indy for the games, I'd love to hear about the festivities

@mushroomgod That makes sense. Illinois is an easy drive, same with Michigan. You may not see Illinois fans until Saturday with it being suh an easy drive and no need to stay over night on Friday
