...  One of the more remarkable things that Cignetti has done at IU, that I don't think most think enough about...he never won a national title at any of his earlier stops.  He actually rarely won conference championships even.  So to step in to a program like IU, and do both those things, in 2 years.  Its defies any sort of reason or explanation. ...
" IT'S INDIANA! " 😎

Someday we will say that about the basketball program again.

Yesterday's game killed the vibe.

Yeah it was bad. I doubt many of us expected a win but hoped for beating the spread or at least looking like we had a pulse. Not scoring 50 and being blown out.

How about this I don’t think he will get a guy better than Tucker or Lamar next year.  Tucker has not been good but he is still easily the second best player on this team and smartest bball iq.  He is just slower than a snail and out of shape.  We paid a ransom for Lamar and was the only legit guy we went after.  They are hard to come by and we won’t get someone of his caliber next year coming off this season. We don’t have the money to outspend by a lot and when money is equal you go to winners or programs with new coaches like we were last year.  Limping in the tourney doesn’t help you.

Woe is us, then. We're toast for next year already.

This team went on a nice run, just as they looked done and posts called DeVries done. So let's see how they finish.

I say we bounce back strong. Doesn't mean we beat Purdue again, tall order.

I will say... I hope the assistants are tampering like hell in their available time! 🤣

Kidding. Sort of... Hoping we see some relationships with any recruits that do portal.

@cavanagh Its about impossible to say, right now.  If enough of our current guys leave, to where he has to recruit 6+ guys this spring, and we have a similar budget relative to the market... then yeah, its probably unlikely he'll get guys as good as Wilkerson and/or DeVries.  But if we return enough guys to where he's only recruiting for 4 or so spots, and our budget increases relative to the market... I don't see why he couldn't land 2-3 guys that are more NBA level guys.  It'll be hard to replicate Wilkerson's scoring ability, but maybe with similar money he can get a Robert Wright type of PG?  Maybe he can get more elite athletic dawg wing and dawg post guys with money similar to what he spent on Tucker and Bailey?  Maybe he'll be able to get a legit pick and pop length guy to compete with Sisley for PT?

I think if we have a decent game against Purdue, win 3 out of our last 4, win a game in the BTT, make the NCAA tournament, win first round or have a competitive loss... its not a fantasy to think the donors will open things up a little bit.  So I think a reasonable outlook for next years team could be...

PG... Portal PG, more of a top 20 level PG than what we have today.  Elliott Cadeau, Wisconsin's left PG...someone like that

SG... Dorn

SF... Portal Wing, elite, someone Wilkerson's caliber.

F... Sisley

C... Portal big.  Someone like Chinleyu, Hansberry, Flory...

6th man... versatile portal wing... 3 and D type guy, a little better version of Miles

7th man... portal F/C that has some size and will actually shoot 3s

Ristic... back up PG

Miles... another athletic wing for depth

3 incoming frosh... any of the 3 could push for backcourt/wing time, and will be a bargain in year 1, if they do.

This roster would probably cost roughly 13-14 million.

@cavanagh Its too early to make this call either way... But logic says if he returns 4-5 guys from the current roster, adds another spring HS signee to the current 3 guys, he'll only need to add 3-4 portal guys.  Returning guys and high schools guys ARE cheaper than getting guys on the open market.  And to your point, none of our returning guys are playing themselves in to huge paydays yet.  But even if Dorn does regain his form, and finish the year strong, he'd still be cheaper for IU, than if he had a similar season and hit the open market.  So taking all that in to account, he'll have A LOT more money available for those 4-5 portal guys, than he did last year.  That opens the door up for him to seriously go after NBA levels of dudes.  If he could land an NBA level PG, Big man, and wing.  And we get 1 of the freshmen to "hit", and one of the returning guys to "hit"... then we would be markedly better than we are this year, I would think.

That's a reasonable hope for how this offseason could play out.  If we beat Purdue again, and or win the rest of the games, and play well and win some games in March... and energize the fan base a little bit, and the donors... then this becomes more of a likelihood.  If we get thumped by Purdue, lose 2 or more of the other remaining games, and either miss the NCAAs or limp in and don't look good... then it becomes much less likely.

Yesterday's game killed the vibe.  Gotta get it back going on Friday.  Doesn't have to be a win, but proving the first game wasn't a fluke is very important, in my opinion.  Both for the fans vibes, and also for the donors buy in.

Other programs won't be beating down the door to get to Dorn.  He shoots 8x as many 3s as 2s.  And doesn't rebound much or handle the ball well. (4.2 rebs every 40 minutes played, .06 assists, 1.5 TOs).  And, he's pretty slow and not much of a defender.  I would not overpay for him.

I like the idea of trying to get 3 studs, and filling in with everyone else.  If one of those everyone elses is Dorn, fine.

only 1 team has won the title since 1987 without at least 1 First round draft pick on their roster.  That was us ... coached by RMK.. last basketball genius ...

@hoosiers94 and even that team had a handful of very highly rated kids coming out of high school.  Thomas, Calloway, Alford all highly rated.  And Garrett and Smart were both stud transfers.

Calloway should have been NBA material. Did he blow out his knee(s)?

I'm somewhere between Cav and IUNorth on this. I'm really disappointed in the "juice" that CDD was able to conjure up in his first year. Maybe he didn't have the NIL and that is on Dolson, maybe he was looking too hard for "his culture guys", he took too long to assemble a staff. BUT, with a strong finish to the season and a better than expected off-season, we could be close to where we want to be in year two. Or this thing could fall on it's face and next year will be worse than this year.

North is correct in that we should be able to spend big on 3 or 4 guys. I doubt if anyone is going to poach Dorn, Sisley or Miles.

CDD/IU is obviously going to be compared to what U of L and UK are doing as we are only one year behind them in this progression and CDD has some ground to make up, IMO.

Back then the players used to play pick-up 'practices' in AH w/o the coaches being present (They did watch from a distance).  My brother and I went over and were able to walk right in and watch.  We had high hopes.  The team looked horrible, especially Garrett & Smart, and we walked away bummed about our prospects.  Those were the days....

@mushroomgod I played against AJ Guyton's class in the barnstorming tour games.  I thought AJ was a "wasted scholarship" at the time, and thought Mike Lewis was overrated.  Clearly I hadn't developed my razor sharp eye for talent, that I have today.  Ha ha.  It never dawned on me that those fellas probably didn't want to be there, practicing and playing against guys like me... and that it might have meant quite a lot more to me, than it did them.  Oh to be young and naiive again.

Mike Lewis

One of my favorites. Threw a ball off someone's noggin, went toe-to-toe with Knight during the Michigan game. Dude needed a wheelbarrow to hold his balls. I always wanted him to shoot more, though ... such a sweet stroke.

Who knows, maybe ML will get on a heater the next few years and be a legit candidate in 2029-30. Given IU's allergy to top tier coaches, it's not an impossibility.
