@sig Scores at multiple levels.  Rebounds fairly well for a guard.  I think his effort level is blown out of proportion...and I do think its partly because of his "resting lazy face", and very even body language.  At Indiana, he played pretty hard, and fought through multiple injuries.   He just didn't always look like he was busting it because he's not demonstrative, and his game is very smooth and fluid overall.  He isn't a quick change of pace guy, for sure.

In college Romeo was a prolific scorer, but not a shooter.  He scored in the paint, and excelled driving.  He struggled with his shot, specifically from beyond the arc.  Perhaps it was injury related.

Bates is a streak shooter focused on the 3.

i won’t get into comparisons of overall game, since most people here focus on one thing:  shooting.  There is more to offense than shooting the 3.  Yes, it’s paramount in today’s game, but a player can be a scorer without being a three point shooter, specifically in college.

the numbers don’t lie.  Romeo could score at an elite level, especially for a freshman (at the college level).

@cavanagh That's not true.  But if it makes you feel better I guess...

@gerdis Bates was not focused on the 3. Only took 4 attempts per game his senior year, same as Romeo in his only year. It was part of his game, but not the focus.

I thought I said somewhere in the thread that I was comparing their IU careers?   Would you response change if that were the case?

seems to me (IIRC), Bates came off the bench at IU and would often be immediately looking to shoot, often from beyond the arc.

@gerdis I think part of that was dictated by the offense Woodson was running.  There really wasn't a lot of room for perimeter guys to make plays in the lane.  Coming in to college, if I remember correctly, Bates was known as an all around scorer...as much or more than a shooter.  Similar in that regard to Romeo.

@iunorth Yes it is true.  TMP was the only one not crushing my take.  I was even doubting myself after Bates sophomore year.  But then anyone with a brain could see it was Woody after his year with the Tigers.  The whole board that was being vocal on bates said he sucked, was a joke, his team sucked 0-20 in conference, blah blah blah.  Was endless.  No one wrote anything positive or anything close to acknowledging him being a possibility of going to the nba.  If you or anyone else thought that, sure as hell didn’t talk about it.

Then the goalposts from about midway through his senior year when they got some wins and ranked, till now….. Have widened like Lucy’s rear (where is my girl and guy!?!?!) bent over for Kurt.

What does score at multiple levels mean?  Romeo has scored 4.6 ppg per game in 141 NBA games.  How many scoring levels can be built into in 4.6 ppg?   Playing hard is not the same as playing with intensity.  Nembhard, Nesmith, Caruso, Dort, Pat Beverly they play intense in your face defense that leads to momentum changing plays.

I'll take romeo over Bates because I think has an elite skill defensively.  I don't think Bates has an eite skill to break thru as a consistent rotation NBA.  Hard work is what will get the broderline players there or keep them there.  I'd like to see both of them succeed but Bates has a ways to go to play in 141 games.  As a Mavs fan, I would not trade Ryan Nembhard or Miles Kelly for either of them.

@cavanagh If he plays in some games this year, you'll declare victory.  You're already setting that up, using his 2 way contract as some sort of momentous sign that you were right... Him never playing in the NBA wasn't the original discussion.  And there weren't a lot of people saying he'd "never" play in the NBA.   The core of all this was Tamar versus Romeo.  And that comparison is years from being even close to clear, if it ever will be.  Tamar averaged less points, less rebounds, less assists, and was a decidedly lesser defender, as a senior, than Romeo averaged and was, as a freshman.  Where the comp goes from there... I guess we'll see what Tamar does the next few years, but using Tamar's college performances as any sort of comp against Romeo... doesn't make sense.  Romeo might have averaged 30 a game if he stayed all four years?

As for what I typed...honestly don't remember.  I do know that I was, and am, a Tamar fan.  I'm sure I vented frustrations over his struggles at IU, at the time.  But I know I also preferred what he was capable of doing, over some of the guys that were playing over him, that weren't capable of doing much of anything.  My doubts on his NBA career have been centered on his struggles defensively, his lack of assists, and then the hot/cold nature of his 3 point shooting.  My doubts don't mean anything, obviously.  All it will take is 1 NBA GM to believe in him. Maybe he has that in Denver.  We'll see.

@cavanagh Sounds fair.  I hope he does.  Or I should say I hope he sticks, and is in the league for a while.  I certainly don't "know" anyone in the NBA ranks, but I am hearing from some southern Indiana people that Romeo playing in the NBA again is more likely to happen than not.  The people I'm hearing that from, would definitely be biased though...so take that with a grain of salt.  If he did make it back though, obviously that would make your call less likely of happening.  One advantage that Romeo had was a 5 year "tryout", due largely to his potential and his initial draft position.  Not sure Tamar will get that long of an audition.  He's gonna need to stick early on.

@cavanagh You are taking advantage of those who don't watch the NBA.  McKinley Wright got minutes for the Mavs as a 2 way guy a couple years ago.  Josh Reaves from Penn St. was an UDFA and got a 2-way deal for Mavs and played in about 5 games for them before Wright.  Bates getting a chance to play some NBA games is not that big of a surprise.  Some of these 2 way guys these days I never heard of.

@sig He was a shoe in for getting a look after his senior year and the trend to actually liking the experienced college guys now. His size a 40/50/90 guy.... He will play, only question is how much.

I was actually kinda surprised he didn't go in the last 10 picks, he had a ton of calls and his family really thought he would go, and knew he would at the least get a 2 way.  He did hold a draft party with like 50-100 people.  So he for sure thought he was gonna go

Why anyone with an ounce of real basketball acumen attempts to help a basketball retard like Cav understand what a nimrod he is, just eludes me. I have absolutely nothing against the kid who came to IU as a 5-star and rapidly proceeded to get his gf pregnant and clearly torpedoed his scholarship. But when some board big mouth, who obviously has never played or coached a single second of competitive sport, repeatedly bans anyone who questions his takes, I take offense. Bates’s daddy texted Cav occasionally, so of course he’s the next NBA superstar. 😂

@cavanagh Experienced College players have typically gone late 1st and early 2nd  and UDFA route a lot.   Not just a trend now.  Hard to predict 40/50/90 until you see if his game translates to regular season vs the speed and athleticism on the defensive side of the ball.   NBA teams often call to see if a late 2nd will sign a 2 way if drafted.

I thought Nembhard would get drafted late 2nd.  Glad he didn't because Mavs got him. Hope it translates to real games in the regular season.  Same for Miles Kelly.
