I may be in the minority here, but I think Dolson whiffed by not getting McCollum. I'll die on this hill until proven otherwise.
That's who I wanted too. I think he's gonna to win at Iowa and make them a regular tournament team. But Devries is our coach now, and I'm optimistic about that.

@hooky that pretty much sums it up for me, too. I became a fan of BM during the coaching search and had determined that’s who I wanted.
CDV’s name didn’t really come up until he was hired so I didn’t spend any time looking into him. However, since he’s been hired I have and I’m glad he’s our coach and am optimistically anticipating the start of the season!
It’s also difficult to say Dolson whiffed without actually knowing what all transpired, let alone seeing the actual product, of both, on the floor.
It will definitely be interesting seeing how it all plays out.
I think Devries will do well here at Indiana, but whether that is sufficient is an entirely different question. Improvement is demanded, but most are looking for the return to glory - as we SHOULD!
Glory is, of course, contending for titles - B1G and Natties - and with our large fan base & resources & (ancient) history, we absolutely should aspire to be that type of program again.
It is easy for us to see, but 38 yrs suggests real contempt for the program in some quarters that effectively destroyed our program from within. Had there been a will, there would have been a way.
That, my friends, is far worse than what Coach Devries does or does not accomplish in the next year or two, or whoever coaches after him.
On that, I’m gonna pour myself a treat & contemplate further 🥃
@receipt-keeper Good attitude Hook.
While I regarded God as a tyrant I thought my sin a trifle; But when I knew Him to be my Father, then I mourned that I could ever have kicked against Him. When I thought God was hard, I found it easy to sin; but when I found God so kind, so good, so overflowing with compassion, I smote upon my breast to think that I could ever have rebelled against One who loved me so, and sought my good.” C. @gthomas I was pretty consistent in my desire for McCollum, before he emerged later in the year as a widely accepted viable candidate. But, the more I've dug in to DeVries, he's pretty widely regarded as being one of the smarter, and harder workers in the coaching ranks. I've been impressed with him thus far. Getting a couple elite commitments this fall, then a solid 1st year, is the next step. Unless McCollum has a "Drake like" first year at Iowa, we won't really have any conclusive answers on all this for a few years.
One thing on the positive side, is I do think DeVries will play a more appealing style this year than Iowa will. As much as I like McCollum, and many things about how his Drake team played... the offense, watching Stirtz pound the ball for 20+ seconds... not nearly as fun to follow as what we'll likely see. Now, winning ends up superseding all of this. But watching the ball being whipped around, and a bunch of threes being taken, should be pretty fun to follow.
@iunorth how do you think recruits wanting to get to the NBA will think about CDD vs McCollum?
@tammany It's a logical question, but I think BM will adapt to a more skilled roster; I don't envision a Drake 2.0 situation offensively. Last season, former D2 guys played a good share of the minutes, so they were out-athleted in nearly every game. Drake's methodical style of play gave them the best chance to win.
I don't think Iowa will average 85 ppg or anything, but I'd be surprised if they averaged in the 60s. In any case, I think a lot will depend on how Stirtz transitions to major D1. If his game doesn't translate well, it will be a long season in Iowa City. If it does, they could be dangerous.
@tammany VERY short examples to use...but it sure appeared like DeVries changed more with the types of kids he brought in, in his first year at WVU, than McCollum did at Drake?
And then further evidence that McCollum is going to be MUCH more program and style specific than DeVries will be, is how they constructed their first rosters at their respective B10 schools. McCollum brought a handful of his Drake kids, and filled in around them with guys that fit more in the style that he's been playing. DeVries...1 kid from WVU (his son), and then 1 other kid from his Drake days (Enright). And his IU roster is very different from what his last Drake rosters were, and from what his WVU roster was.
Those things are facts. The conjecture I have is I think DeVries probably is more comfortable changing things about his program to match elite level talent. BM will look for, and attract the best possible kids that will fit in the style he wants to coach.
The thoughts and facts above lead me to believe DeVries will attract more NBA level talent than McCollum will. The key, if that's true, is that he attracts the right ones.
