It appears DD built a roster with the purpose of out-shooting opponents. If IU had a bunch of snipers, that would probably work quite well on the offensive end, even without bigs. Unfortunately, he only brought in a few good--but not elite--shooters. And it seems defensive ability was an afterthought.I think he didn't fully appreciate the value of a stud rim protector/scorer. In the big ten, it's pretty much a necessity.
I wa super impressed with his defense last year. Top 20 ranking in Kenpom I think. I remember talking to my buddy and I was like if he does that again we will easily be in the tourney for once.
Welp, he underachieved in all metrics and is 60 in D. Puke.
@hoosier-clarion IF the dog hadn't stopped to piss, he'd caught the rabbit.
CDD isn't going anywhere but I'm 20/80 that he is our guy. Anyone could have coached this team to the results they got. Several coaches could have coached this roster to a much better season. Make the tourney, not make the tourney, record, smizzzz smazzzzz......at the end of the day, for me, the product on the floor just sucked for the most part. Some of the games we did win felt like L's to me (UCLA, Purdue) with the way we tried to give the game away at the end after gaining control in the second half. No rebounding, not much defense, too much chucking up long shots, no fundamentals. When they moved and cut on Offense, it didn't look bad at times, but those times were just too few and too far between.

People say the DD offense is fun to watch but to me all I see the games I watch is just a team jacking up a bunch of long range three pointers. Yes Wilkerson sometimes drives but he is really the only one. Michigan State has a nice mix of an inside outside game and is fun to watch for me. IU has zero inside game.
62% of the IU shots were three pointers. 47% of the Michigan State shots were threes and they made them at a much higher clip because the inside game leaves shooters open. We just force alot of contested bombs that are not even close.
Tayton drives. Bailey had those two games with a lot rolls to the hoop and score. Alexis has had some. Those nights we also get the open looks from outside. But defenses apparently adjusted, or were just better teams, and we don't have much of an answer except jacking less open threes.
I should have known, when against the early season cupcakes we were shooting sometimes from 27 feet and Coach was saying 'green light to shoot'. Against weak teams all those 3s with a good offense should be from right behind the line with time. Boded (is that a word?) ill for the better defenses when we couldn't do that.

If a frog had wings he wouldn't bump his ass everytime he jumped

I knew it
I know, you, some others.
Even I said so at the time(s), but then gave being still green, as the reasons. 🙄 Saw signs that stuff got fixed from one game to the next so said he would coach us up.
Not realizing we would hit such a low ceiling. And even regress in some ways.
Well, got a few more games. Reasonably healthy. Lets see...

I know, Woody had more money to play around with, blah blah blah. But DeVries still had good bank (2nd-highest in the B1G, it seems).
For anyone and everyone: Before you knew the coach or roster, would you have considered a worse record than last season to be acceptable? If so, you are the truest of true fans.

I will give him next year to see what he can do but I am certainly not very optimistic maybe because of 25 years of nothing for the most part. But he is very highly paid and like you said the bank is not bad at all. I am just kind of over excuses for IU coaches maybe its because of football success. I certainly do not think he will get fired no matter how next year goes but it will tell alot about the direction of this program.
Anybody with sense knew it was possible. I called 10-10, and unfortunately was wrong.'24-'25: 19-13, 10-10

Our 'program' is and was in the dumpster.
I even think for next year, the post saying 'single digit losses' or else the year is a failure, is also off base. Single-digit losses regularly, nearly every year, is the goal and very possible, once or if, DeVries and Dolson can get this train back on the rails.
Next year? Maybe, but single digit losses is a sort of stupid bar for a program that has not done that for ELEVEN YEARS.

I couldn't disagree more. This is the old way of thinking. IU Bball coaches have enough money to guarantee a single-digit loss season every year, from year 1 on during the transfer portal era. Michigan was 8-24 in 2023, 25-9 in year 1, 29-2 in year 2. There is no need to wait years for establishing some culture just to become a higher-level team. I can understand needing that to become a national title team, but not to be a single-digit loss team.
