@tr32 and yet they just won the natty.... it's the coach! Michigan has tremendous resources, some of the best in the country, but none of that means jack if you don't have a coach who can put it all together. That's been our problem- we have the resources, now more than ever with our football success, but we can't seem to ever make a good hiring decision for the head basketball coach.

As you said, Michigan has a bad arena (which I expect they'll upgrade in the next decade) and hoops is 2nd fiddle to football (maybe third to hockey, but they choked again last night), but they went out and got themselves one of the best young coaches in the game- who happens to be a freakin' IU grad!  They are now poised to dominate the Big 10 for the next 2 decades and we're going to regret not hiring him when we had the chance.

we lack the foresight and the balls to make the right hire at the right time.  Always worried about doing what is perceived to be the best"right thing" at the moment which turns out to be the wrong decision long term by far.  This is so much more of a cutthroat business today and we don't treat it as such. These kids aren't student athletes anymore. They are hired and paid mercenaries.   So is the coach.  Hiring Cig was pure luck when you look at the results he's delivered.  Bringing him in, they knew he would improve things compared to Allen. That's a given , but if you're gonna tell me they thought he'd win. A Title in year 2 , I won't ever believe that.  So point is they didn't make that hire with the balls or foresight in relation to the results that have been realized.  You'd think they would learn , but Cig's success I think might be a negative when it comes to the basketball hiring situation... it's natural that Dolson would think to repeat the same process he used to hire Cig. Problem is , no one is that lucky to hit the lotto twice ...

So the basketball process is a different animal and needs a different approach... one we are not likely willing to take

McCollum is basketball's "Google me" guy. Too bad his dream job was/is f***ing Iowa. I think BM would have stayed at Drake until the Iowa job opened, even if Fran had been given two more years.

If reports are accurate, it's shocking the majority of Iowa fans wanted DD instead of BM. Obviously, they didn't do their homework.

@hoosiers94 Exactly. Keep hearing the story that we almost hired Beilein, until Herbert decided we couldn't hire another "white guy"... so we ended up with Sampson. Decision was based on perception instead of what was the best thing for the program. I'm sure some of those same factors went into hiring Crean- couldn't hire anybody with even a hint of impropriety.

@iugradman How do we know we don’t have the money? I keep hearing guesses but I don’t think anyone really knows. I also think if we had a big recruit that was interested, we could probably figure out the money. I know there is a difference between the football money and basketball money, but you can’t tell me a national championship didn’t help donations.

According to the guys on btown banners all we have to do is get burton and sherrill and we will be rolling. If money is not object I guess we will soon find out.

@jhoban19 Crean was different in my mind in that we had just burned the program to the ground (and with no transfer portal to rebuild from). He was one of the few coaches who would take the job, knowing that he had to start with basically walk-ons.

What do those guys know?  It seems that nearly every time people have posted info from them, it's turned out to be a crock.

Hope is not optimism, which expects things to turn out well, but something rooted in the conviction that there is good worth working for. - Seamus Heaney, Irish poet and likely Hoosier basketball fan.

They do not know anything its just kind of funny to read because they really hype themselves up into believing we will get these top players.

If Sherril goes to Duke; he will just be another guy.

If he comes to IU he will be THE GUY. Because there will be nobody else is on the team!

Need one elite 5 man like Sherrill.  It's just too important in the B1G.  Pay him $5M if need to be then get an elite PG for $3M.  A shooter for $2M and Moneyball the rest.
