It looks like IU is being outbid for Almond and Thompson. At some point, IU will have to put on its big boy pants and pay up if it wants to get elite talent.
@iugradman stop worrying about this class. It’s a weak class. There’s a reason coach DeVries won’t overbid for these guys. Let him cook. 2027 class is the class to watch.
@d-b-cooper Allmond we would end up regretting not getting, I have a feeling. I guess we don't know what CDD's views are on the talent in the top end of the 26 class, and whether he sees the value? It'd be interesting to know what he and IU are willing to spend for an elite player that CDD does desperately want?! Assuming the reality is some version of what you just typed.
Because missing out on ALL these fall kids is not a good look, at all. And if we do miss out on Allmond especially, because of money... that one will give me quite a lot of pause. I'd be of the mind that if the money is there, I'd spend it wisely, but I for sure would spend it. The last think IU needs is to become a well coached Northwestern, or Purdue from 10 years ago, type team.
@iunorth we haven't lost any recruits yet. Supposedly some of the chatter about money and offers isn’t true. Trilly etc….we know how all that goes. I’m not worried until it’s time to worry.

Obviously still a lot of time, and the guys we're in on that haven't yet made their choice are all pretty darn good, and highly rated.
And we did get Barnham, who's ranking will rise, I'm sure, if he stays in the 27 class.
Also, we'll get in on a kid or two yet, that hasn't been mentioned much with IU connections, I'm sure.
But if we miss out on ALL the mentioned kids above... no way to spin that as good. Hasn't happened yet though, to your point.
Latrell Allmond is announcing his commitment this afternoon. Barring a shock, it will not be Indiana. I called Allmond to IU months ago and I got this one wrong. I have been told Allmond is getting an NIL deal that IU did not want to match and that was pretty much the end of Indiana's chances. Anthony Thompson's recruitment becomes even more important now.

I get the principle of it... but the last thing Indiana basketball needs to be is a principled program with lesser talent. Indiana should have the resources to be both principled, and a major spender. This is where the recruitments are going to go for basically ALL top 30 kids.
No idea if these rumors are true, but word was $1.5-2M for Allmond. If true, that's a lot for a freshman, especially one pretty far from being a top-10 kid, and I could understand letting him go.
Not trying to cope. There is also a chance we were just beat out in this recruitment.
@tammany it’s definitely a lot of money. Just wondering if that’s just gonna be the going rate for top 30 level freshmen? I happen to know that there are NAIA kids, at some of the top NAIA programs, getting NIL deals approaching 6 figures a year now.
Whatever the reason, missing on Allmond will sting.
@iunorth Not sure. That does seem too high, especially assuming it was closer to the $2M number. That's 20% of a $10M roster on some freshman who won't be an immediate impact guy. I'd rather spend that much in the portal on an older player, ideally with more than a year of eligibility.
Is it the going rate? I don't know, maybe. With 25+ schools with $6-7M+ to spend on players, and the top-10 being over $10M roster spend, it only takes one school to really want a player to drive the bids up.
I'm glad my job is not to recruit CBB players. It looks like a miserable time.
@tammany I still think most of these reported NIL budgets are just points of reference, guesses, guidelines...etc... And that the actual end numbers are pretty elastic from those reported numbers. I have sourced info that helps form that opinion. But its also just logical, to me.
Anyway... agree with your last sentence. I can't fathom the challenges that come from all this. Was Oklahoma State even a major player for Allmond throughout his recruitment? All it takes is a program like Oklahoma State, getting an infusion from a big donor, and then blowing huge chunks of it on a player or two, and schools like IU will have wasted months and months of time and effort.
@iunorth I agree NIL is elastic. I'm just guessing total roster costs at the end of the day -- maybe I'm off. It's hard to know, I even have a hard time telling exactly where IU ranks nowadays. Maybe #10-15? Not sure. Like you say there are so many variables.
Recruiting this and NIL that... for IU, I think 90% of it will come down to how well CDD can coach here. We're around KenPom #40 to start. Make the tourney without much drama this year and we're off to the races. Miss the tourney and it's looking grim and like more of the same from the past 10 years.

There’s probably more than “30 kids” who are capable of having success with, but I understand where you’re coming from.
@tammany Yeah, its all guesswork. Our friends to the north, as an example, likely have a much larger NIL spend this year, than most would think...potentially even more than IUs. This is where the elasticity side comes in. I think IU's general capacity is MUCH larger than PU's. But when teams roll around like the one they have, it can and will get pretty darn elastic.
