October KenPom rankings mostly reflect last year’s data. Baylor, like Indiana, has a totally different team now, so those early numbers don’t tell us much.
Torvik is a better barometer.
yep no players coming back, no data behind the numbers, means total guess. They did not look like a tourney team to me. They normally have awesome guards, not so much this year. @mushroomgod But, what if we have a coach who understands what the preseason is for and adjusts lineups, when a quarter of his roster isn't sitting on the bench? He's obviously offensive oriented and likes multi-skilled guys, so the appeal of Bailey is obvious. He is very skilled for a big and is going to have good nights. I think CDD underestimated the size in the B10 and leaned on that he's gotten by with thin post rosters before and I think it's going to bite us, but we are where we are and he has proven he's excellent at adjusting. Agree 1000% that Enwright wasn't brought here to start and I think both Enwright and Bailey will be coming off the bench in short order. Enwright, as soon as Dorn can play, and I think that's always been the plan. Hope Drake and/or Ristic get back soon. I thought Ristic looked better than expected in PR.
@cavanagh The pollsters must be thinking about those great Baylor teams of 5 or 6 years ago. I realize it's an exhibition game but they looked like a middle of the pack Big 10 team.
@bigmike Pollsters are one thing. For some reason I thought KenPom used prior year productivity from returning players for his preseason rankings?? Even if those players came from a different program? Like any/all preseason rankings though, they're just guesses. TV and Media won't ever allow for no rankings until a few weeks in to the season, like it should be.
You can argue about pre-season rankings but Baylor is not a cupcake. It was a legit game and although it was rough for a while we stayed in it and managed to win it.

Yes, KenPom has always said his stuff isn't worth much until around Christmas.
Torvik has Baylor 35 and IU 41. That might be a little more in line with what we saw.

They practically use the same metrics.
@hooky It's everyone's guess as to where Baylor and IU end up after the 2025/26 season but your Torvik numbers make sense.
@iunorth These pollsters give us something to talk about. I was checking KenPom for his year end 2024/25 season numbers. He had Ohio State at #37. The Buckeyes were only 9-11 in the conference and 17-15 for the season. Eight other Big 10 teams were ranked higher in KenPom.
@bigmike I like your attitude Mike.
While I regarded God as a tyrant I thought my sin a trifle; But when I knew Him to be my Father, then I mourned that I could ever have kicked against Him. When I thought God was hard, I found it easy to sin; but when I found God so kind, so good, so overflowing with compassion, I smote upon my breast to think that I could ever have rebelled against One who loved me so, and sought my good.” C. H. Spurgeon
@ams66 I was encouraged that we didn't shoot well from 3 and were able to stay in the game. Just think what IU's offense will be when they get their injured players back and the 3's drop.

@bigmike To me a more meaningful statistic/fact is that it's Baylor with Scott Drew as coach. I know he generally produces good, athletic, and tough teams that most often wind up in the top 25 and tournament. Obviously, that might not be this year, but this was a good win for a brand new team, with depth and size challenges. Gutted out a win, made FTs, defended and still have things to work on with rebounding, rotations and getting guys healthy. About perfect for an exhibition.
@kkott You make several solid points. I am pleased for the Baylor win. I liked the comeback, hard play and the fact that the team had an assist to turnover ratio of 2:1. I do believe IU has finally hired a basketball coach. The metrics by the "experts" don't mean beans. Hey, the football Hoosiers were given little pre-season respect. The Drew family can coach. Was in South Bend when Homer, father of Scott & Bryce was head coach at Bethel College. Homer then went on for a short stint at IU South Bend and then finished up at Valparaiso where he elevated a "nothing program" into a respectable one.

yep. Grew up with Scott in Valpo. Still keep in touch. They all can/could coach. So this win, although an exhibition, is encouraging!
