@cavanagh not sarcasm,if I remember correctly he was one of the first that he signed in the portal.
I think maybe there was a connection there somewhere? I know you are connected to the program somehow and know more than myself.
But I just don’t understand how someone can say after one exhibition game he has no business being on the floor.
The fact remains it is a completely new roster and he had hit and misses like any coach.
He is light years ahead of Woodson in terms of coaching ability and likability,at this point that’s good enough for me.
@ccmac I am on board with you on coach. But because I watched CJ Gunn (I’m sick in the head) I saw how atrocious he was last year. He sucked at DePaul, I don’t see how anyone thought he could start for us.
and not connected anymore. Cavanagh’s corner died and JD retired. Don’t know anyone except Jeremey Gray, and he’s just an actor these days :).
It's happened more than once in these exhibition games that we start off weak and get behind, then rally and manage to win. That says something about the players, and also about the coach's ability to make adjustments, and keep them engaged and playing hard.
@ccmac Enright played for DeVries at Drake...there was a familiarity with him and a trust level. I don't think for one second that Darian DeVries envisioned Enright as a starting guard for him at IU. I do think he sees him as a rotation piece but they definitely need Dorn and Harris and, to a lesser extent Ristic, to get healthy or Enright will be pretty much forced to play big minutes.
@ccmac is this sarcasm? Because he had the entire transfer portal he was hired right after we missed the tourney.
With no staff.
He had difficulty putting his staff together. That was on him.
I have mixed vibes concerning CDD.
I believe he overpaid for Bailey (yes, I know UK recruited him). I saw a comment on the game thread--"Bailey has to get stronger". I agree; unfortunately that's not going to happen. I just don't see the fit here. He's a good ball handler and passer, but he's a guy who needs the ball. I'd rather Conerway have it. He's a liability on the boards and on D, when we're already weak in those areas. And he shoots a decent % on 3s, but only took a couple of 3s per game when he was the center of the O at Davidson. His scoring at Davidson was primarily on low post moves. He won't be as able to finish in the BT, and we won't feed him the ball low as they did at Davidson.
Wilkerson & Conerway are really good additions, and I'm really high on Alexis. He should start 10 times out of 10 over Shipley.
CDD's very personable. Does he have heft? I don't know. I don't like to see us behind 10,15,20,25 points in the first halves. Is that being addressed? Also, can he finish on the recruiting trail? He hasn't so far.
There's a Cig effect here that is not working to CDD's benefit.
Anyone reading anything Cavanagh posts and thinking it has any actual knowledge behind it is in need of therapy.

@the-leal-deal cute name, just to troll me. Glad I live in that head of yours!
@mushroomgod yep everything you just said. I can tell you that Hoosier nation is extremely skeptical of CDD. Ticket sales is the best way to judge enthusiasm. They are worse this year than any year under Archie or Woodson. CIg has a lot to do with that as you said. Fans expect real winners for their time and effort, and bball ain’t the only show in town. I’m gonna lose my ass this year unless we beat Marquette/ and Louisville or UK.
@cavanagh Hoping for a season similar to the 2011 season. Need a couple big early season wins for that...if not a Wat Shot type of moment as well. If we lose the tough early OOC games, and look average doing so... that will be a rough start for CDD and the fellas, and will be a weight they carry all year long. They don't have to run the table, but they need to win a couple of the Kansas State, Marquette, Louisville, Kentucky games...obviously Louisville and UK will be enormous, momentum producing opportunities.
@iunorth if they don’t win early and are just meh there will be talks of firing him after year one. AH is gonna look a lot different this year, lots of empty seats to start the season. The day has finally came, IU basketball is not king and the fans are fed up. Took 20 years but we are here.

And that's on Buckner and his cronies making one ridiculous hire after another for 25 years. Not on CDD.
Connor is like that 3rd hockey line with the scrappy dude the opposition hates because he always is hustling and trying something on defense. Not so bad to have one.
I thought he missed some plays, dribbled off his foot once, missed another rebound he grabbed but then dropped, a couple times instead of boxing out he went right up too close behind a tall guy for a rebound and so it went to the guy behind him... And didn't look like Tucker was looking for him until a last resort.
But when Connor did need to put up the shot I know he rattled a three, could've gone down. At least he was looking for boards, a couple box outs and he'd have had some. He'll improve.
@cavanagh In a strange turn of events, I think Cig and the football program have both raised the expectation levels for major sports, including BBall, but also muted what the reaction will be to finishing below those expectations... and maybe to meeting or surpassing them.
IU Bball has top 20 resources, relative to the rest of CBB... look at what Cig is doing with lesser relative resources. Anything less than B10 champ contending BBall, is underperforming... But then when they fail to meet those expectations, I doubt the drumbeat will be nearly as loud as it was for Woody and Archie. Especially if IU is a fun team to watch, stylistically.
Just guesses. Beating LVille or UK would give him quite a lot of brownie points though.
IU basketball has not been very good in recent years and the fans have lived with mediocrity. Over the last 9 seasons the Hoosiers have a conference record of 81-93 and a composite 167-127 (.568). Sadly just two NCAA tournament appearances with one lone victory. DeVries gets a team into the large NCAA tourney field and many will look at him as a hero. Making the NCAA tournament is a low bar and should be a given for a "basketball school." Heck, Tom Izzo has gotten Michigan State to 27 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. I bleed cream and crimson but acknowledge IU has truly not had any sustainable basketball success since the days of Bob Knight. I am pulling hard for DeVries because at this time there is no other option.
