@gthomas Yes the Fife/Matta angle made me hopefully think "maybe this can work" despite all logic to the contrary. And we thought perhaps Fife was the "coach in waiting" and Matta was there as the consigliere.

"Consigliere." So good.

Woodson was never viewed as the long term savior.

Woody was brought in to stabilize the ship, and then hand it over once it was in better shape. 🤣 🤣

Which he did not do he failed big time and was as toxic as can be. At least half the fan base hated him big time.

Yep. And Fife and Matta were brought in to make us feel better about the hire. In fact, most IU fans liked the Matta "angle" far more than anything else.

Deep down they knew it was a crap hire would not go over well that was just window dressing to try and calm people's nerves.

Woodson had no intentions of ever being a 'bridge'. That was how it sold, but he was never going to give up that cushy job and salary along with his wine parties of cronies praying at his feet. He would have died of old age on the sidelines just like his hand-picked right hand man Armond Hill did years ago.

I agree a bridge is like two years and they had to force him out after four years kicking and screaming. He would never have left if they did not force him out.  Why do people think they tried so hard to make year four a success for him. The whole thing had to be sold as a lie cause they 100% knew the hire was not at all going to be popular. Shows you just what utter clowns they are they knew it was a bad hire and still made it.

the problem was all we ever heard about was how you had to hire an iu guy and finally quinn saw his chance.

And the IU guy nonsense was always code for Alford.  No one in a million years thought they'd be dumb enough to hire Woodson.

@dbmhoosier Bingo! Alford -Maaaaaybe Whitman, were the only 2 IU guys remotely capable of coaching IU, Alford may have worked, much like painter, IZF he would have been hired shortly after RMK. No other IU guys are/were qualified for this job.

Alford was only ever a message board fanboy fantasy. The good ole boys club doesn't include him. QB, Bigfoot, Isiah, etc. all wanted one of their buddies from their era. Anybody past 81 doesn't count in their circle.

Yep and to be in that club you have to be a horrible horrible coach. Just look at quinn and isiah as coaches

@dbmhoosier And it wasn't "everybody" plenty of people rejected the idea that an "IU guy" or Alford specifically was the answer.

Joe Hillman screamed and yelled about hiring an IU guy for years but my guess is I think he thought it would be alford not a horrible coach who had never coached college. I cannot even imagine how awful woodson would have been in NIL did not exist.
