I didn't even know he was sick.
RIP. One of the greats.
"ICON" Hoosier style.
I had the Newspaper mailed to me in Columbus, OH just so I could read Bob. He will be missed.
BEAT PURDUE
Hammel was a great guy. Loved his inside connect with Knight. My parents were friends with both Bobs. (Like hi and how's the family kind of friends.) All of them are gone now. Go Hoosiers!
Bob Hammel provided many Hoosier fans countless hours of entertainment through the articles and books he wrote. He was a true gentleman and the type of person you'd find hard to dislike. Mr. Hammel will be greatly missed.
So much knowledge of Indiana basketball history, inside and out. Losing him is like a library burning down.
@irregulars I also loved reading Hammel. I too had the HT mailed to me when living in CT. for a time. No where else could you get that kind of coverage with such a wonderful writer.
My favorite comment he wrote was during RMK’s first season after a game coach was ranting about how bad the defense played in a game that IU won big time. After quoting Knights rant, Bob’s comment was, “of course shutouts are few in basketball”.
@socks-shorts-1-2-3-swish At least he wrote books. They survive him.
While I regarded God as a tyrant I thought my sin a trifle; But when I knew Him to be my Father, then I mourned that I could ever have kicked against Him. When I thought God was hard, I found it easy to sin; but when I found God so kind, so good, so overflowing with compassion, I smote upon my breast to think that I could ever have rebelled against One who loved me so, and sought my good.” C. H. Spurgeon

Back in the day before the Internet, a call to Bob Hammel settled a lot of bets.
