How we feeling on this one? Anyone with any intel?
Thompson is announcing at 10:00 am. I would be very, very surprised if he chooses anyone but Ohio State. The Buckeyes are the home-state school and have a rumored offer of 3 million dollars on the table. Indiana has made the decision (a wise one, in my opinion) that they will not be matching that. No one knows for sure but again, I'd be stunned if it were Indiana.
@tjinman1987 yeah. I’m glad we aren’t matching. More pressure on Ohio state staff to score this one. He’s a top ten guy in a weak class.
I think AT is an Adidas kid. Should we in any way be disappointed in Adidas support in this recruitment?
Probably least concerned with missing on Thompson... timing of missing on him, after missing on the others, makes it sting more than it should. He's a one and done kid, in all likelihood, that isn't generational like Flagg. Allmond, Taylor, and some of the guards we've missed on, hurt quite a lot more than this one, in my opinion.
speaking how i, personally, would construct a roster...i'd loved to have added this kid but there have just been so few genuinely impact freshman each year that i would prefer to just add an older transfer for similar money if all is equal.
it stinks they missed out on these guys but building through high school and what thompson is aren't the same thing...thompson is basically a high end transfer since he's a one and done.
I think they add karvala and then wait until the coaching carousel hits and add from that.
@iureactionary Crazy to think about all the dynamics CDD is going to have to juggle and navigate through. I still have to imagine IU has the ability to spend with just about anyone. Its intriguing, to me, that CDD appears to not want to get in to these bidding wars. We're up to about 5 or 6 kids that the narrative says we might have gotten, if we had been willing to spend some more money. That can be endearing, when you win. Not so much when you don't.
I'm sure he wouldn't mind buying a true superstar, like Duke did with Flagg.
But I know if I coached at that level I'd want a solid base before I asked donors to fund that level of stuff.
i kept seeing people talking about "building through high school". thompson is essentially a one year transfer and i'd rather a proven commodity.
now, my mind will change if they don't put their money where there mouth is on some of these transfers that they're going to need.
but as of today, i'm not all that concerned.
i'm willing to give the staff some latitude on the misses with these high school kids
you're right. it would have been nice to see them pony up. but if it's not an impact kid and you're paying $3m for thompson and $2m for allmond...give me conerway, wilkerson, bailey and alexis for likely similar money every day of the week.
@iureactionary The magic is figuring out how to get equivalents to ALL of those guys. That's who's winning Natty's nowadays. Multiple NBA guys, with multiple future NBA guys behind them...
But using Florida as the most recent example... those guys don't HAVE to come from traditional 5 star one and done, and or one and done portal routes. In fact, with regards to Natty winners, they're usually NOT teams made up largely of one and done frosh and one year mercenary portal guys. Sometimes those types of players are sprinkled in... Castle and Spencer a couple years ago for UConn... Martin last year for Florida. But more of UConn's and Florida's players were lesser heralded, multi year guys, that ended up becoming NBA level guys. Unfortunately, we're seeing that same thing happening up the road from us.
However CDD gets them... and maybe he already has some of them?! Maybe Sisley explodes, maybe guys like Harris and Dorn both explode... We need for that to happen, and then we need to add a few potential NBA guys with them.
Daunting challenge. He can never be daunted though!
@iunorth I was going to say the same thing. I hope CDD is a good evaluator like our other revenue sport coach. 😉 getting pieces that fit seems the bigger key for the near future.
