I expected IU to compete for a NCAA spot, and they did that.  Not much you can do if you can score five feet from the basket.  That's all roster construction.  There have been signs that he isn't the guy but there have also been signs that he can learn from his mistakes.  Let's hope he does.

We shall see not only will he have to upgrade the roster he will need to upgrade his coaching. Most teams in the big ten will update their roster so just doing that will not cut it. The coaching has to improve and by alot.

A decently athletic 6-9 power forward would have averaged 5-6 dunks a game in this offense, playing Baileys role.

Shouldnt be tough to recruit a couple good bigs. They can watch film of our fumbles and envision what if they had been given that feed.

see that's just as big of a part to me ... and that won't be able to be judged until the season starts. Which is another wasted season

Reneau could have made a difference.

@arioznahoosier4554 If IU doesn't make the tournament next year and it's exactly like this year with no development, no program standard being set IU should cut bait. There was almost nothing that can be taken from this year outside of we need better players, that can be used to build upon.

We'll cut bait next year after Schertz is off the market and is building another P5 program into a monster.

I just looked he is having a great year so I assume somebody hires him this spring.

Shertz should be one contingency among several that Dolson has on the table by Feb 1st.

That's the only thing you took away from this season?

@gthomas There was nothing else established. No foundation, no standard. Do we know if DeVries can coach? No, because he had vastly inferior talent.

He gets a year two, but to say we learned anything about a foundation is grasping at straws.

Watching these conference tournament games and it’s clear how far we need to go. Big east and even the top of the MW. Utah state would murder us and a few top B1G teams.

@d-b-cooper grew up in NYC going to the Big East Tournament. This is an elite atmosphere.

But yes, it shows how far off IU was this year.

At least we had a win over 3 of the 4 teams in the B1G tourney semifinals. We feasted on cupcakes but were 3-2 vs those particular not cupcake teams. So maybe not totally lost. Doesnt matter though, we have an almost all-new team again next year. Which usually sucks, but in this case is good.

Talent disparity between us and top teams looks like the grand canyon. Only takes a few high end guys though to get close.

Does DeVries even know big time basketball? He was a mid major assistant for 18 years then spent six seasons as a mid major head coach before coaching one year in the Big 12. And Dolson thought he was ready to compete in the Big Ten?

He blew a lead against Miami. So that big time basketball impressed the hell out of Dolson.

At least DeVries is now closer to his degree in Big Time Basketball from the School of Hard Knocks.

Whether DeVries is the right coach or not. Dolson was out to lunch by not having the GM position and staff help for that position last year, as soon as he knew Woodson was leaving. Didnt need to be hand picked by the next coach. Although I think it will work out fine. Carrs comments indicate a good start to the relationship with DeVries and big reason why he took the job.

you REALLY try hard to find a silver lining don't you. I commend you for that.  But this situation isn't going to get better. We may land some better players but it's what he does with them .. we might make the Dance with better players but his ceiling is the problem.  Even with better players he's not taking us to the top of the rankings.
