Hmmmm
I like the talk about how good Cherrys arm strength is. First spring Coach made a joking comment about it needing more a little weak. But said they will improve that with training. Now saying its good.
I thought Jacob Bell highlights back in high school looked good, thought the coachs found an underrated 3 star. Nice to hear coach say he has a live arm.
Geske even got a mention. Cool. Good depth.
@myteamisonthefloor what’s the hmmmm about?
Hoover is the starter. I asked about Cherry because I was curious about his journey back to the field, not because he was getting first team reps.
anyone who knows anything about football knows spring ball is when you experiment a little bit.
It is good to see him back though and his development is key to the future of the position.
I don’t recall Cig sitting Rourke or Fernando just to get a peek at another 6-5 arm.
I need to eyeball them, but I would noot yet bet against Cherry to start an OOC game. Or maybe he is just motivation …
@myteamisonthefloor Tyler Cherry has not played a game in over a year. He's coming off major knee surgery for an injury that could have ended his career. Cig was very upfront about why he did this. I don't know who else you read or listen to, but if they are telling you Cherry has a chance to start without an injury to Hoover, they are stealing your time.
It's spring practice. It is a time to experiment and get the reps you need with different groups.
Coach has said many good things about Hoover's progress.
Good to hear the depth is looking good too!

@thehoosierhuddle What that says to me is the coaching staff feels really good about Hoover. Good enough that they feel they can sit him a bit to gain some experience for young guys who may be pressed into action from an injury or illness. I'd say it says more about who they are looking at as the #2 option, than #1.
@kkott Yep. They are comfortable enough with him to "sit" him. He still practiced and got reps, it's not like they just removed him from practice.
I'm guessing if coach was worried about Hoover, he would act differently. I read that as a positive for Hoover i.e., I'm more worried about the other guys if we need a backup. Hoover will be good and has good wheels. Can't wait to see what they scheme for him as a true mobile QB. Go Hoosiers!

I agree with all that. But … my tea leaves say Hoover ain’t ever gonna be 6-5, and Alberto went to Tech.
Just talking … and pondering …
So … is Cherry running well?
@myteamisonthefloor Cig has won with guys who aren’t 6’5”…we haven’t seen Cherry run or at least open it up.
I wonder if Geske is ahead of Bell? As Cig said he wanted to see him with the twos. Although also says good things in your article about Bell's arm.
If he is ahead of Bell, that's pretty cool for a guy nobody else in P4 really wanted as a QB. Is he still a preferred walk on for us, or is he on a scholarship? Bell was 'only' 3 star but had some offers. Geske had big HS numbers but weaker competition.

My assumption is pretty close to @thehoosierhuddle. Cig said explicitly he wanted to see Cherry with the 1's. And if you heard Charlie talk about Hoover, he said the dude wants to throw constantly. Even said if he did what Hoover does, his arm would fall off. So it might be Cig thinking the same...actually forcing Hoover to not overdo it at least for one practice.
@bucketgetter That's another theory that should carry water, but I cannot confirm it. Yesterday was not the first practice where reps were skipped, either. So it could be a "load management" type thing.
