Wonder how long that will be tied up in courts?

Can someone break down the details? What does the EO actually do and would it be good/bad for IU?

I'm admittedly stupid. 😂

Not sure an EO does squat here.  No funding for change.  All this comes from Sabin anyway after Trump went to T-town.  They (SEC) are afraid of us now because of the money we have.  The B1G can pay players and nobody cares too.  Result = two B1G NATTY'S.  Primary deal with this EO for me is - no outside third-party payments.

Just wait until the B1G wins again this year.  Massive grin!

They'll be screaming foul.  Remember they (SEC) are entitled to be the best.  Just ask them.  I live here.  Go Hoosiers!

@mobilehoosier no outside third party payments — I assume that’s referencing NIL?

As with all this and the clearinghouse… I don’t see how the $ flow to players can really be stopped without lawsuits galore from players, etc.

Thanks for the summary.

@tammany Feels like salary/budget cap stuff to me.  I believe people will always find a way to gain an advantage if they can.  Hate to see a sitting President get involved. Killing a fly with a nuke. Go Hoosiers!

This is Bullcrap. This is America. You should be able to make as much money as the market will bear.

Problem is it won't stop anything.  Just may have to pretend those pay to play payments are tied to some kind of actual NIL.  Which is exactly what they are already pretending.

Basically just thinking he will get a free win without accomplishing anything

No matter the system, it will have its grey area workarounds.

This is awful.  It completely negates the progress that was made.  By putting financial restrictions in place for players, the only thing they do is create a black market. Much in the same way as it was before. When this much money is involved, there will 100% be motivation to find ways around it.

The only thing this does is it allows the NCAA to hold some programs feet to the fire and allow preferential treatment to other programs. For example, IU basketball was brought to its knees when Sampson broke rules that don't even exist anymore, while UNC had literal fake classes and the NCAA suddenly acted like they didn't understand English.

Its wild seeing NCAA lobbying the government to suppress a free market.

As a Hoosier also living in southern AL, I can attest that this couldn't be more true. Hey Mobile, hi from Enterprise. Definitely looking forward to retiring back to Bloomington in 2.5 years.

@low-level-flyer Hey low level, glad to have another Hoosier in the neighborhood.  Thanks for validating the sentiment.  Go Hoosiers!

Saban told Trump he was great.  Then told Trump what he should do to be even more great.  So Trump issued this EO.  This will get contested, and Trump will largely forget about it.

College Football, and College basketball for that matter, need commissioners in place.  Transfer portal needs cleaned up, NIL guardrails decided and then regulated.

There shouldn't be restrictions on earning potential or anything like that.  But contracts are needed, at this point.  Pro sports have binding contracts.  Non-competes are very common in the business world.

@iunorth Agree.

I suspect to really clean this up collective bargaining would be needed?  I've got a hunch schools do not want to get into collective bargaining, per some people that probably wouldn't go well for them -- as in they would probably have to pay athletes more.

So, if the schools try their hardest to avoid collective bargaining, change will probably be slow and we'll be stuck with this Wild West we have now for a while.  Just a guess, I don't know.

I thought the rev share contracts would help, but I haven't seen much impact.

IMO, the EO is toothless although I agree with the sentiment.

the only way to actually empower the NCAA (or whatever governing body) is for Congress to grant an antitrust exemption.
