Too soon? What was with the squib at the end?

I didn't love it.  What's the logic there?

Not a fan of the decision either.  I think it might have made more sense with a little less time left on the clock.  I think the objective, and someone can correct me if I’m wrong, was both to take away the potential for a big kick return and to hopefully get the ball to bounce around a little and take up more time.  I’m sure they wanted the ball to travel down the field a little further too before PSU got to it.

This is the second time we have squibed in game where Cig blamed the execution instead of flat admitting it was a stupid call. Dont blame the players for bad calls. He didnt go strong of course, just said :wanted a little better there...

Id rather they fair catch it and get reasonable position rather than risk 10 easy yards with little more time off the clock. And that is what usually happens with squib kicks.

Kicker did kick a rather poor one though, lol.

Cig mentioned they didn't execute that right. My guess is they were trying to do a low hard kick that wasn't easy to handle and would chew some time off the clock. Kicker just kicked it way too soft

Sqibbs can be tricky to execute.  While a well executed squib can take some time off the clock, it may be less risky to just boot it through the endzone.

I dunno -- our staff is smart so I'm sure their logic was decent.

Yes, surely that was the plan. The odd plan.

Oh well, Cig and staff make so many good decisions training their team and in games, I can learn to handle the ahem, unusual calls.

I know it is common. Sort of *the book*.

I dont think it was a dumb move at all. We had been struggling to put the ball out of the endzone all game, and a squib reduces chances of a big kick return. As a plus, it also helps kill clock, which with 36 seconds left and opponent lacking TOs, is a good way to increase win %. We just executed it very poorly.

Which percentage chance of happening needs to be factored in to those pluses you name. Doesnt take a very high frequency of what happened, happening, to completely blow all those other minor gains out of the water.

Making it the wrong call. Ill be curious to see what the analytics guys say though. Maybe.

Cig and staff study football for a living, and probably some staffer has the choices on a sheet with time and timeouts left. So, maybe. I probably hated it based on results. But, I thought before we kciked - hope we dont try some weird squib though. But I was more worried about kicking it out of bounds, or the squib actually helping the return, which also sometimes happens.

Yeah, there’s no way they “intended” for it to be executed that way. They could have just kicked it out of bounds and still been in a better spot and I’m not saying kicking out of bounds would have been a good idea. Just saying if that was intentional they could have done something slightly less dumb with no chance of return and still had given up less field position. It was definitely intended to be kicked much harder and deeper. We really needed Franke. Needed to just kick it out of the end zone. I hope he is back soon.

It was pretty clearly a botched squib. I get the idea of it. He’s been able to get it into the EZ regularly but not nearly as good about getting it through the EZ as Franke.  So, I get the squib and the pop up kicks to the up men to try and eliminate returns or, in this case, put a wrench in the works of any tricky returns. It was just horribly executed and potentially catastrophic.

At least PSU gave us a solid back using their last timeout wholly unnecessarily

Thats where you see the benefit in playing a first time interim HC
