Now, Im getting much of this from the Penn State board where theres a bunch of disgruntled fans, who even their own fans are calling stupid for running down the Hoosiers. But in the game thread I also saw a lot of other big time program fans saying the same thing.

The argument is, well two fold, one we got all our talent from the portal,so Cig has not shown that we are good at developing players . (Many fans retort, sure, those JMU guys were elite when they were recruited...), then the second part is we have shown by last years losses and being taken to the wire by Iowa and Penn State that we do not have the talent of the big boys to go toe to toe, we cant match Ohio State, Michigan, Oregon, Alabama, A&M, LSU, even Penn State... for recruits and talent.

So, heres where it gets dumbest - All the above means that Cig and Indiana will not be able to sustain winning, because Cig has done it with weaker rosters which is not sustainable. Hasnt shown to coach freshman up. Hasnt shown elite recruiting. (in his whole two years...)

So, in the future when he doesnt have the elite depth that he already doesnt have now, well ... then... not sure, I get too confused by the argument.

Of course more intelligent fans respond about what the heck do they think coaching up is? Of not taking supposedly lower talent and getting high end results from them? And if they think we won with less talent, wouldnt that show its more sustainable?

Not sure if Im venting or just enjoying the ride. Grin

I’ll remind folks that just last month, A&M, who many say should have jumped us this week, won at Arkansas 45-42.  Arkansas is 2-7 and the last place team in the conference without a conference win.  The narrative from the SEC faithful is that it was a tough, gritty win, while the narrative for IU is that we suck because we only won by 3 points at PSU.  At least Penn State was ranked in the top 3 at one point this year.  Arkansas didn’t even sniff the top 50.

Alabama was down eight points late in the fourth quarter at South Carolina, a 3-6 team. Georgia struggled with 3-6 Florida at a neutral site. Texas barely won at Kentucky and Mississippi State and lost to Florida. Only Ohio State hasn’t been seriously challenged.

I cant read the social media takes on IU because they are so unbelievably stupid

Reality:

Iowa would likely be a playoff team if they played ISU in October instead of September. They have a top 5 defense and they have one of the best home field advantages

The score for Oregon doesnt reflect the domination. Pick 6 + kneel down kept it to 10 instead of being 3+ score game. Oregon is also top 5 in scoring defense.

Kennesaw State is as good as a mediocre P4 team this year. They would have beat Wake Forest if they had simply made their QB or kicker switch 1 week later than they did. Wake Forest just beat Virginia who is currently ranked 20. We beat them by 50, just as we did UCLA, Maryland, Illinois, no one else has been dominant like IU has.

We have as many rushing yards as Alabama + OSU combined.

OSU runs the score up, I watched their games, you cannot tell me there is a single reason Sayin should have been packing in the TDs against Wisconsin other than stat padding. The only reason they do that, is to go back to the prior point, which is they cannot run the ball. "most complete" team they are not. OSU also has mediocre special teams.

If our team is healthy, we are the best team in the nation. I think we destroy Alabama, A&M, and I like us to beat OSU by 7 or more. The caveat, is the OL needs to be healthy. I have not been super impressed with our backups, they havent been terrible but are much more inconsistent which is killing drives.

Social Media has made it so easy to give "hot takes". Every outlet wants to be first in declaring someone is a fraud or that something is "over" (we are all guilty of it). On X I saw people write off Mendoza's Heisman campaign and then crown him after the game.

Social Media is a giant bar where people are gonna spout whatever they think and sometimes it's great and sometimes it's embarrassingly bad.

The reason people say wild things is that it draws attention. While walking down the ramp after the game there were a number of PSU fans just chatting about the game and saying IU would get killed by whatever SEC team we play in the CFP. That's normal, people are just now doing it publically.

@openwheel Agree with Sammy that much of the negativity is fueled by attention whores. It's also driven by jealousy.  And it makes little sense.  Best to just ignore that trash.

Listen, do you all remember when Brohm had Purdue rolling well? Well, I was jealous. I envied Purdue and was really upset that they got Brohm before IU could get to him. I don’t go on social media and spout off, but if I did I probably would have said stupid things.

Now, IU is in another stratosphere beyond anything Brohm did at Purdue or even anything any coach has done except maybe a few like Day, Lanting and Smart. I can really understand why fans from any other team are very very jealous.

makes me very happy!😀

@thehoosierhuddle Im kind of surprised we havent had any OSU nuts join this board yet.

The PSU fans are just salty their program isnt what they thought it was. Must be pretty humiliating for the coaches of lil ol IU and downtrodden Nebraska to publicly remove themselves from the PSU vacancy. I believe it was Dan Mullen, HC of UNLV, who also said he had no interest, as did Urban Meyer after they tried to claim they rejected Meyer lol (there is no way Meyer would ever coach a team that had to play the Buckeyes routinely).

You’re very lucky that those same PSU fans didn’t invite you to a shower party at the Sandusky Center.

Yeah I've argued this in previous threads. We will have to have sustained success for several years to gain respect.  We are Johnny come lately. The losingest program in division 1. So I get the negative doubting.  If cig can make a run for 7-8 years of competitive teams year in and year out we may lose that moniker.  Otherwise it will just be "we were a flash in the pan ". Is what it is.  We win the whole dam thing and a lot of them will shut up.

I see the problem..."Reddit" fans.

No longer the losingest team. Northwestern took that over from us this last weekend.

Anyone who thinks Cig is not insanely good at coaching up players is dumb as a box of rocks.

It reminds me of what someone (Bum Phillips?) once said about Bear Bryant, "He can take his-uns and beat your-uns, then turn around and take your-uns and beat his-uns."
