Kind of surprised we brought in 3 TEs in the HS class for next year given Cig's propensity for leaning towards seasoned starters.
This year, we have 3 outgoing seniors and 2 freshman for 5 total.
Next year we are looking at 5 freshman (assuming Thiery and Barker maintained their redshirts). So either Cigs really likes one of them to start, we are going for a bigger TE room next year or there's an expectation of Thiry or Barker transferring out.
Blake Thiry (RS Fr)
Andrew Barker (RS Fr)
Trevor Gibbs (Fr)
PJ MacFarlane (Fr)
Parker Elmore (Fr)
Good points & I believe Indiana will recruit at least one productive TE transfer & maybe two.

TEs are always good candidates to become OTs or DEs
IU will go get at least one veteran TE and I wouldn't be shocked if this is a position where you see someone transfer out as well. Gibbs was a better defender in high school than a TE and he was pretty good on offense, so maybe he also makes the swap to defense.
There’s always one main reason anyone in a position group is recruited over. There will very likely be attrition here.
will be writing about the spring roster but this is a very weird dynamic to have 5 freshman...they're def going to bring in a transfer or two but will be interesting to see what they do with gibbs...

True, could be a position switch in someone's future.
I remember a coach in the past, maybe it was Kevin Wilson, saying on a recruiting day, that you should recruit plenty of tight ends because you can often turn them into good offensive linemen. (It may have been James Franklin when he was at Vanderbilt. It was either him or Wilson, pretty sure.)

Pretty sure Jason Spriggs came in as a TE before being an OT.

I think we are likely to convert MacFarlane to WR given his size and how productive he was in HS as a receiver. We also dont really have any big WRs on the roster outside of Becker.
I hope we convert Gibbs to DE or LB, and beyond him I dont think the guys we have could get to OT size given their frame. Maybe Barker?
I never knew that and it isn’t in his IU bio. He started as a true freshman at OT and played tackle and defensive end in hs. Oddly, the only reference I can find of him as a TE as a recruit is on 247 which is odd since his bio doesn’t mention him ever playing that position in HS. He was listed as an OT as a recruit on rivals. I agree TE’s can be developed into good OTs though.I remember a coach in the past, maybe it was Kevin Wilson, saying on a recruiting day, that you should recruit plenty of tight ends because you can often turn them into good offensive linemen. Apparently he never played tight end but rivals projected him as a tight end in college. So since his rivals profile said TE, I assumed he started as one and then converted to OL but apparently it was just a position guess by rivals

- @hurryinghoosiers yeah, I went back and watched CKWs review of the 2012 class and KW mentioned he played TE in HS, but was coming to IU as a tackle. I don’t know if he played both positions as a senior or switched to OT his senior year, but he did play TE at some point just not at IU. It is impressive you even recalled that detail. 😆
Kris Dielman came in as a tight end, too. So did Jeff Fryar.

JJ Watt was a tight end, transferred to Wisky, and developed into an defensive end. That worked out pretty well.
