In 2026, ND is guaranteed a CFP spot if they are ranked in the top 12. Why would they join a conference?

Notre Damn never gets any respect.

Why did the powers that be negotiate that? Was ND really going to sit out any possibility at a title? Exactly what leverage do they have?In 2026, ND is guaranteed a CFP spot if they are ranked in the top 12. Why would they join a conference?
I think ND would make more money being in the big 10 than being independent.
and their fans are not happy. Their boards read like a contest to see who can create the most overwrought victimhood narrative, mixed in with a narcissistic attitude that they can somehow take their ball and go home from the CFP and upset the entire landscape of college football on their own.
All they have to do is become a fulltime (all sports) member of the ACC. They’ll dominate and be in every year.
Aside from sharing football revenue, I think ND’s concern is just the opposite (that they wouldn’t dominate and be in every year).
They would make an extra $50M+ per year by joining the B1G. They won't for one reason only. They're chicken shit.
They won’t because they don’t want to and they don’t have to. That’s never inhibited them in any meaningful way until the CFP, and we’ll see if impacts the “have to” issue. They’re never going to want to.
They want to be able to gimmick their way into the playoffs. It's the only reason they do what they do. It's worked for them in the past. Obviously not this year.
What’s their “gimmick”? What didn’t work for them this year was a weak ACC schedule, losses to the two best teams on their schedule, and their top win against the fourth best teams in the Big Ten. They just didn’t take care of business on their schedule field.
No shit. They scheduled only 2 games with possible losses and did so right at the beginning of the season. They did so as they know losses at the beginning of the season hurt less than losses at the end. Didn't work how they wanted it to.
Six of their 12 games are out of their control. Of the remaining six, three are long time rivals. So, Arkansas, Boise and A&M are on them. Of those three, only Arkansas would’ve been considered an easy game.
Wisconsin, Michigan State, Purdue and USC should pay the buyouts and cancel their games with them next season.
Why would they do that?
Because ND’s decision is selfish and hurts college football overall. In fact, all P4 schools should avoid them until they join a conference.
The ACC would love ND to join on an all-sports basis, but they’re thrilled with the partial membership. Not sure why anyone thinks their refusal to join a conference hurts college football. That just sounds desperate.
Because they play by a different set of rules than everyone else. Ohio State got $20 million when they won the national championship last year. They had to split it with 17 other teams. Guess who Notre Dame had to split their $20 million with? No one!
They also never have the pressure of playing in a conference championship game.
Like I said, they don’t want to join a conference and, most importantly, they don’t have to. If the latter ever changes, they’ll be in a conference. Until that day, they’ll likely continue to do their own thing, just as they always have. They’re unique in college football.
Nice to see ND have a collective temper tantrum because they didn’t get their way. Entitled, elitist pricks.
This is funny, but the post I saw that said "and alabama snap benefits kick in again" is even funnier!
If men were any more stupid, we would have breed for the extinction of women. Proof yet again that WE are the best thing they have going for them.
Some of their fans want them to lead the way and build a superconference. They think they can pick off Texas, USC, Michigan, and Clemson. Others want a lawsuit against the "cartel" of the CFP (of which ND is a a part, which I guess they don't realize). Many blame the ACC (??), the SEC, ESPN for shilling for the SEC and spreading "misinformation" about ND in the rankings. Some think they're being discriminated against because they're Catholic, bringing up being shunned by the Big 10 a hundred years ago.Wisconsin, Michigan State, Purdue and USC should pay the buyouts and cancel their games with them next season.

None of them want to admit that they didn't beat anyone all year and had two losses to two good, but not really dominant, teams.
@jackskip23 ND and the ACC “collaborate” to choose matchups. They absolutely have a say over those 6 games unlike any other team in college football. You don’t get to cherry pick your dogshit schedule then cry like little bitches when you lose your only two good matchups and get left out of the playoff. Join a conference or GTFO. No one feels sorry for them and this is a bad look.

It’s a bad look to decline participation in a bowl game, but they’re clearly one of the 12 best teams in college football, yet they’re not in the 12 team playoff. That doesn’t seem right to this long time college football fan.

Well, their SA's will get to be unique from their couches.
I would have paid good money to be at that watch party.
Meh, I'm not a Domer by any stretch. They and their fanbase are up there with OSU/Michigan levels of obnoxious, with a smattering of Chicago arrogance tossed in for good measure. That said ND lost to Miami and aTm by 4 pts total their first two games of the season and didn't lose again for nearly 3 months...but somehow they were effectively jumped by 2 teams in successive weeks who did nothing to earn the bump? I get that Miami didn't make their CCG but I can see looking at H2H as a late differentiator so they have a legit argument with getting in.
Bama OTOH, hasn't had a good win since Tennessee in the middle of October. The last 4 games were lost to Oklahoma, beat a directional Illinois cupcake, barely squeak by a weak Auburn team before getting their shit pushed in by Georgia for a 3rd loss. 3 losses and 2-2 in their last 4 shouldn't have gotten them in.
A good friend will bail you out of jail, but your best friend will be sitting next to you in the cell saying "that was f***ing awesome"
