@jackskip23 - The quote was from the USA Today article:
"Mendoza says he will compete with Hoover for the starting job, and says Fernando told him to go win the job instead of waiting. Force Indiana and Cignetti into a difficult decision."

Got it. I misunderstood that he was quoted as saying it.
@yothn it feels like there was potentially a misquote, but with how specific the writer was it’s hard to conceive that he misunderstood what Alberto was saying. It’s just hard to imagine that Alberto didn’t already know when he did the interview that he was leaving. Why confirm you are staying if you know you’re leaving? He could have just said I haven’t made up my mind yet, or that it’s still up in the air. I had that intuition from Cigs response on Alberto that something was amiss. I’d really like to see the video from that interview he was quoted for that article to see exactly what he really said. Just an all around strange sequence of events.
After doing some digging I found Alberto’s presser. He never mentioned Hoover by name and after listening to it a few times the only thing he says that could be construed as he is returning to Indiana is he said he is “ready to the the reins as a Hoosier”. Everything else he said was not specific to Indiana and the part about Fernando saying to stay and compete seems very inaccurate when he says Fernando would say he is ready. I never heard anything about making Cignetti make a decision, but perhaps a different reporter asked the same question and he gave a different answer later ? 🤷🏽
see the last 20 seconds of the interview below.
I dont see anything in the article that says the quote is from that presser. But also telling is the writer didnt use quotation marks.
Doesnt matter. He gone.
,
Yeah I agree. I was just saying thats where we took him at his word. Clearly the article was inaccurate for reasons.we won't know. Not a big deal, its just why people gained confidence he was returning. Hes a great kid and Im rooting for him.
I don’t know about you all but I am continually refreshing the page. This time it’s not to see who we’ve added but to make sure that we keep our boys in the fold. I am waiting on bated breath for tomorrow at midnight.
Next to the QB, Hoover, Carter Smith is Indiana's biggest "get". Boom Baby!
@red-hornet - For sure. According to ESPNs rankings yesterday, he was the 18th best player this season in college football, overall. 3rd best OL. Its a MASSIVE deal.
@olympian97 again, this is two days before the title game. What else is he going to say. I’m mad at Cig for bringing in competition, so I’m gonna leave?
The deal will Georgia Tech was announced hours after the game. That deal was done well before that.
Do we have any potential portal transfers on campus? Hoping to get another OL transfer onto the roster. I imagine scholarships are pretty maxed out at this point. It would be interesting to know what the coaches feel are the most pressing priorities?
Come on midnight!
What happens if a player withdraws in say March. Enrolls at another school, and plays. Would the NCAA forfeit all their games? Didnt a player do that a year or ago already, bail after the spring portal, and nothing happened?
Tucker is returning!!
