@lncolnpk - This will be my last post on this topic so we keep the thread for its purpose. I think you completely devise new conferences purely based on the regions of the schools. So I assume it would align with that for the most part.  The regional battle is what gave college sports their extra umpf. Its also easier to standardize how teams are selected for CFP using that format.

Anyhow, AJ Harris is a MASSIVE pickup.  I have a hard time not putting that up there at the top with Hoover.  He plays with the same kind of anger/fire as Ponds.  He has more size and "5-star pedigree", whatever that is. Harris is a very big piece of the puzzle we needed.  Now if Ponds somehow stays.....lol

Hopefully Purdue gets left out of any super conference. I’d love to see them wither on the vine.

They'll take Indiana in football, and Purdue in basketball.

Basketball isn’t driving any of this.

Obviously.

But a snide remark on the state of our basketball program doesnt work without that.

Wiltfong thinks we take another QB as he thinks Alberto hits the portal. Something to watch.

I hope this doesn’t mean Khobie Martin is transferring.

It appears our two-deep for the D next year will be comprised of 20 DBs 😅

@the-watson I wouldn’t be surprised to see more nickel without 3 LBs that are damn near impossible to take off the field. However, we have 2x 4 star LBS and DTs, and talented edges that will be young depth pieces. I’m starting to wonder if they feel confident on Tucker returning.

The timing of the portal period stinks. I want these younger guys to stick with our program, I get it they want to play.  What is wrong with having only a late spring portal period?  Seems logical to me.

Trying to keep the student part legit.  Probably hard to take classes if switching schools halfway through a semester

It would hurt the depth to lose him but with the transfer portal it wouldn't be a bad thing to have him go start somewhere and he can come back next year if he is really good. Let him start at a MAC school next year.

@hurryinghoosiers Also I know the programs want these kids in to begin work in the spring. Why did they do away with the spring portal though? Seems with such an overlapping and compressed timeline with the CFP and portal in the fall, a spring portal makes sense.

We need to move up the CFP schedule, eliminating conference championships and the multiple dead weeks in December.  Championship game on New Years Day. Portal opens day after.  Most schools open only two weeks after that so there is time.

Of course coaches want players as early as possible and the flexibility of a spring portal window.

I was just pointing out how that doesn't really work well with passing classes in the spring if moving schools midway through semester.   Either they would get grades they didn't earn at new school or keep taking their classes at old school but remotely.  Continuing that setup would have been step 1 in getting rid of the student part of the equation.

Need to find a solution that gets all bowls completed before any school starts their spring semester.  Get rid of any dead weeks, teams shouldn't get more than 1 bye week and if necessary move the first game up a week.  but get the season done in fall semester/winter break

Practically speaking, this is the best way for Alberto see the field as a P4 starting QB. Cignetti isn't the only coach to value production over potential and another year of getting QB2 reps behind a 1 year anointed starter is another year of lost eligibility.

FCS or G6 program, getting playing time and starter reps day in and day out in practice is the key.

Of course this is all predicated on the goal of P4 starter and NFL hopeful being the primary goal.

I mean his brother was set to go to Yale before Cal made him his only P4 offer. He landed in Berkeley realistically looking, at best, earning QB3 his freshman year.

Haas (and Kelly) are regularly considered 2 of the best undergrad business schools in the country, so he certainly didn't duck a challenging classroom environment while having big dreams - but the day he decided to go to Cal, I believe the academics side of things was as important, if not more important, than a football only decision.

After earning QB1 for a year and a half (and getting his degree from Cal) he wisely looked around for the best opportunity to maximize developing on the field and obviously made the right choice for himself and IU. I believe when he evaluated his transfer options, the prestige of Kelly was a factor, this time, less of one than the football side (and yes, I know stuff like family also played a role).

Fernando's story is so inspiring exactly because it's so rare for the underdog QB3 to become an elite NFL prospect.

But Alberto's situation is different now. Cig can say he turned an FCS starter into a Day 3 pick and then a P4 starter into a #1 pick (if the Raiders are smart) or #2 (if the Raiders mess this up and he falls to the Jets) - so Cig will always have a chance to bring in proven starters like Hoover going forward at the QB spot.

Can we keep this thread on point rather than breaking off into a discussion that could be had in its own thread?

I don’t really know how it works but it would seem that any kids in the spring portal would just finish up their classes before actually transferring to their new school. They have no spring practice to go to and summer work outs have not started yet.
