Day 2 is a tough call for a lineman in the NIL era. He will make more money at IU next year but the shelf life on lineman can be pretty short.@mrhighlife He's projected as a Day 2 pick, so we will see but I have heard it is not a foregone conclusion he leaves for the NFL.
He is going to get a nice NIL package from IU, another school or head to the NFL. Hopefully it's the first option!!Carter, obviously, would be vital to the OL next year as he's been this year. He's an All-American.
Carter is definitely a guy we offer max NIL we can to come back vs NFL.
Yes, this is one reason I don’t think we overspend on a QB. If we get Carter and Ponds back next year that could significantly impact IU’s ceiling. We need to spend on those guys to keep them. Those are two guys that will be tough to replace. I’d like to have Ferrell back too, but I think we could absorb his loss much easier through the portal. How nice it would have been to be a fly on the wall when Cig was having those conversations last week. 😄
We have a lot of experience to replace on the OL. Coogan is a big loss. Not just his talent but also his leadership. We need at least 3 linemen with starting experience through the portal and definitely at least 4 if Carter leaves. If we can continue to upgrade like we did from Katic to Coogan for each position we have a good chance of staying in the CFP picture. Easier said than done though.
1) When good players leave they free up rev share and NIL.
2) It will be interesting to see what happens, but our NIL is up quite a bit and I’m not sure paying for a top QB is an issue, if that’s the route the staff wants to go.
@tammany It seems that Cig has an allotment of money for each position that they are willing to pay. They aren't just going to throw money at what some people call the "best" player because those outlets say he's the best player. They will go get a portal QB, there is no doubt about that, however they can pick and choose the right one for them. Just bringing in a guy for $4-5 million because you can pay $4-5 million doesn't mean you should.

I didn't say that.
My point is if the staff wants a $4M QB, I think IU can afford it and not be hamstrung in other areas. But, I said "if that’s the route the staff wants to go" because if they don't want a $4M QB, that's obviously fine too.
@tammany They have good NIL, but it's not unlimited. You're correct they CAN do it, but would probably not want to if they don't have to.

Would be nice to keep Ferrell and pair with Byard…would make a nice pair at safety. Keeping Smith at LT will be a top priority. Would also like to see if Smothers price tag is in the ballpark in order to replace Hemby
I still think with NIL it makes a lot of sense for guys to come back. They can play one more year at the college level where they know full well they will be successful make good money and have lots of years ahead if they can make a pro roster. But making a pro roster is no guarantee for them so having that additional year of income they can bank may turn out to be important. Unless you are in a situation like Fernando where you are a sure first rounder, you have to at seriously consider playing out your college time.@mrhighlife He's projected as a Day 2 pick, so we will see but I have heard it is not a foregone conclusion he leaves for the NFL.

Adding RB depth is going to be necessary, however, Lee Beebe Jr. was looking like the best RB this year prior to his injury. He was avg 7.7ypc. Khobie Martin is a highly versatile true freshman who leads the currently playing team with a 6.5ypc average and tied for 2nd with 6 rushing TDs. I think hes going to be an all-B1G type of back before its all said and done. We certainly need to address depth due to how common that position gets injured but we have a really solid 1/2 punch if Beebe is healthy.
@yothn Martin is a RS Freshman, but I agree they’ll go get a RB as well
