I know, but he's one of the best qbs on the nation and a former IU commit. If he's interested and affordable, you go after him.
Remind me how we lost him and how he ended up at TCU.

I feel like he just did what everyone else did. Our offense went stale when Deboer left. Penix went into the portal. We were about to hire Walt Bell as our OC and Hoover was from Texas (where TCU is). I'm thinking he made a rational decision.

He committed when Shedidan was offensive coordinator and qb coach. He decommitted after we fired him.
You simply cannot run a program with that type of thinking. So do you take him at the risk of losing Alberto? And making Fernando and their family mad at you? Right before you are heading to the Peach Bowl in the semifinals?https://twitter.com/chris_hummer/status/2001820237230915982?s=20
Yes, please.
There are going to be a lot of QBs entering the portal

He’s got the intangibles and is a good overall QB. I would definitely take him

You have to make your team better. If we can get Hoover, you keep Alberto in the loop, but you still go out and get him because Hoover can undoubtedly win games.
If that hurts Alberto's feelings, then it is what it is, but Cig is here to win and Hoover would help in that situation. Coaches are always trying to recruit over who we are losing. No one will match what Fernando brought, but having a guy that finished in the top 10 in passing yards and touchdown thrown in the country would be a nice alternative.
The Mendoza family understands how this works. Fernando left Cal not long after they beat Stanford, kept the Axe, and FM saying “Go Bears Forever”.
The sport has changed.

Definitely a balancing act and a lot depends on how much, behind closed doors, does Cignetti and coaching staff believe Alberto can really be "the guy"?
You don't bring in someone like Hoover and pay him that kind of money without basically promising him the job.
Hoover will have many options and just one more season to improve and move up his potential draft standing - so I doubt he's going anywhere on a "come on over and win the job with a fair and even competition this Spring and Summer" offer.
IMO, if IU brings in someone of that proven ability and price tag, IU is simultaneously deciding Alberto is not their guy in 2026.

Agree completely. If Alberto is their guy, you recruit and spend differently. Bringing in Hoover carries with it the implicit commitment that the starting job is his, or he’d opt for another team where that would be the case. Cignetti and Shanahan have a quarterback whisperer reputation, so they’re likely fielding more inquiries than they’re putting out. Would think they’re hearing from people who are telling them how Player X would fit the IU offense as opposed to us simply making that pitch to potential recruits. Great position for us to be in.

might be a "both" situation. Alberto is only RS freshman. Maybe the staff has let him know he will most likely get the keys but not in 2026. Hoover(or someone of that caliber) for one more year. Then Alberto for his Junior and Senior year?
I trust Coach and his staff to do what is best. I also think the Mendoza family isn't a petty or narcissistic family. They will do what's best as well. We fans are pretty blessed to have Coach Cig and the Mendoza's.
@mrhighlife - I agree. Coach is only worried about winning. He and the staff know better about where Alberto is. They also understand the need for depth. You can't be one injury away from the season being scrapped completely. Coach has said the same thing happens every year they bring in a new transfer QB. Things are so rough in the spring that they wonder if they are in trouble. Then they get better in fall camp and then really start to improve with each week/game during the season. With Alberto, there are no growing pains to worry about if he is who the staff wants him to be. If he's not, then we 100% need to look elsewhere.
I for one, think Albert is it and he will be a top half of the B1G type of QB and could be near the top.
I have no idea if Cig is interested, but Joseph Simmons (JMU starting OT) announced he is entering the portal. Other than being at JMU I noticed his dad played at IU 86-89. May be someone to keep an eye on to add some experienced depth to OL.

@olympian97 I believe he was a Cig recruit too. One to keep an eye on for sure
how are we looking at tackle next year? We lose Benson and Zen. Any inclination that Carter Smith makes the jump to the NFL?@olympian97 I believe he was a Cig recruit too. One to keep an eye on for sure
@mrhighlife He's projected as a Day 2 pick, so we will see but I have heard it is not a foregone conclusion he leaves for the NFL.
Carter, obviously, would be vital to the OL next year as he's been this year. He's an All-American.
