@olympian97 That very well could be the most hilarious part of the Cig Effect! Now every big boy football school thinks they can pull a rabbit out of their hats like Dolson did. It's going to be fun to watch most of these place flail and flutter in the wind!
I think, in most cases, ADs fire head coaches with the expectation that their "brand" will attract the best suitors, but that isn't often the case ... especially now. Cig is transforming IU into a powerhouse, and Kiffin's Ole Miss squads can compete with anyone, etc.
I'm no insider, but I think PSU believed they could lure Cig to State College ... just like LSU and Florida believe they can lure Kiffin. What they fail to realize is that, right now, IU is a better, more stable program than PSU, and Ole Miss is a better, more stable program than LSU and Florida.
Anyhow, it's quite possible PSU lands Matt Rhule, who is a notch below Franklin. But ... he fits the culture; his record vs. Top 25 is 2-22. Perfect.
If I were an AD, I'd be on a plane right now headed to Louisville. Brohm can coach ... and all he does is beat ranked teams.
This is enjoyable.
IU fans happy. PSU, LSU, FSU, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Florida, Clemson, Texas & USC fans all pissed, Not bad.
On teams making a run for Cignetti...why would he leave IU (granted support doesn't disappear)?
Same with Lane Kiffin leaving Ole Miss for one of these jobs.
The only things they offer that IU can't is an insane fan base who will turn on you at the first sign of distress and the chance to get fired.
Cig is 64. He's at a job where he won't get canned. To leave for a job where if you do get fired at 66 or 67, he probably retires.
Don't let Stew Mandel and these national guys fool you, the appeal of jobs or the ranking of what's the best job have changed in college football.
Lessons we learned searching for basketball coaches too, more than likely….

It's funny to say this, but video games have become so realistic that I see the same thing when I play NCAA 25. I built Western Kentucky into a juggernaut and won a natty. Alabama went 8-5, was unranked, and fired their coach after his 3rd merely above average season.
Why would I go there and risk failing when I can make the playoff every year at WKU? WKU loves me, they'll never fire me. Only job in the country worth leaving for, for me, would have been IU, but for some reason they never offered me the job. Still bothers me. Heh.
The irony of all this is Kelly’s last two defensive coordinators at ND….Elko and Lea just beat him back to back games. And the LSU AD Woodward is the same guy that hired Jimbo Fisher at TX A&M!
@gthomas I dont see Brohm leaving, his personal/family ties to Louisville are very deep. He, his dad, and both his brothers all played for Louisville. I also dont really see Keys moving from GA Tech for similar reasons, these guys are at their dream jobs and have their programs in good shape to make the playoffs on a semi routine basis.
@mushroomgod yes and there will be more pissed if we keep winning and win it all!
@yothn Lane Kiffin would be an upgrade over Franklin or Kelly, so I think he's worth a $50M firing. That said, I'd love to see him stay at a non-traditional power and stick it to a Blue Blood ... just like Cig did by stiff-arming Penn State.
Beyond Kiffin, I can't see any other upgrade being available. Maybe Lanning??
I’d say that Kiffin is as good a bet as any. He’s only held 6 different coaching jobs since 2007. So his average stay is 3 years at any one spot. He’s been at Ole Miss for 6 years, so the shelf life is up there for him.
@hoosierdaddy You might very well be correct about Brohm and Key, but, if you're an AD, you have to make a pitch.

The UK opening (basketball) and the Bama opening (football) goes to show you that coaches aren't willing to jump to these elite/blue-blood programs if they're at a P4 program. Coach Cig wasn't going anywhere, even if he wasn't 67. Freeman is at a historic program. He's not going anywhere. Kiffin might flirt with some teams just to get an extension. He's not going anywhere. The days of ADs plucking the big name are over. They're actually going to have to evaluate what they need with coaches that might be available and not look for that splashy hire. So many times I don't think ADs look for coaches that coach the fundamentals, can recruit high school, and the portal at this point. Coach Cig has made it evident that you can recruit the portal, have immediate success and slowly fold in the high school players. Who thought that little ol' IU football would have a hand in ushering in change in college football? Go IU!
@auburnhoosier They won't go this route, but if I were them, I'd change course, and hire a guy like John Sumrall, from Tulane. Young guy, has shown he'll win games.
Pay him 7-8 million a year. Give him enough money to pay coordinators 4-5 million a year, so he can attract no brainer elite coordinators that fit his program. And fund the staff well enough that the coordinators and he can go get elite level position coaches as well. Make sure a few of those guys have proven to be able to recruit SEC territory well.
Let them do their job with the immense talent they'll be able to bring in to LSU.
@iunorth Sumrall would be great. He's entrenched in the state already (big deal in recruiting). He's a really good coach too.
Freeman is apparently a top target for LSU, I will be rooting for that outcome
Freeman will NEVER go to LSU, bank on it.
I bet Chesney, who took over at JMU when Cig left gets one of these jobs. Maybe VaTech?
