On teams making a run for Cignetti...why would he leave IU (granted support doesn't disappear)?

Same with Lane Kiffin leaving Ole Miss for one of these jobs.

The only things they offer that IU can't is an insane fan base who will turn on you at the first sign of distress and the chance to get fired.

Cig is 64. He's at a job where he won't get canned. To leave for a job where if you do get fired at 66 or 67, he probably retires.

Don't let Stew Mandel and these national guys fool you, the appeal of jobs or the ranking of what's the best job have changed in college football.

Cig isn’t a fit for LSU anyways.  That it a whole other world of a program down there and they need a younger guy who can do the recruiting and politics thing.

PSU was a fit and Cig made it clear he’s staying here.

Nothing is 100%, but it’s about as close to that as we are going to get.

Almost nobody is going to go after Cig now with the deal and his statement. Penn State would've, and might. He has publicly said he's staying. They'll have to look elsewhere.

Freeman is apparently a top target for LSU, I will be rooting for that outcome

Good luck to LSU and I hope it happens.

My guess is he would only move for OSU.

agreed. I don’t think it would be smart of Freeman to leave even for OSU. I realize people think it’s natural to want to go back to your roots, but sometimes it’s better to stay away from places where you have a history or emotional connection. There’s not many examples of where that has succeeded, or at least more examples where it has failed than succeeded.

If you’re having success where you are and getting paid well to do it I think you’re better off staying put. Grass is not always greener and with the landscape of boosters impacting job decisions a change could be very short term and disastrous to your career. I’d like to see coaches stay and force all these schools firing their coaches to hire a coordinator or pull from the G5 ranks. You have guys like Bob Chesney who look like they could do big things and continues that JMU pipeline of great coaches.

Heh, how great would it be to see Freeman to LSU, Kelly to PSU and Franklin to ND?

A good friend will bail you out of jail, but your best friend will be sitting next to you in the cell saying "that was f***ing awesome"

@gthomas sitting here, conjuring up the image of Kelly doing his first press conference at LSU with the phony accent he used

I've never liked him, but I've completely despised him since the Declan Sullivan thing.

@tammany LSU truly is different. The history of gangster/governor stuff is nuts. Kelly was never a fit.

@yothn Lane Kiffin would be an upgrade over Franklin or Kelly, so I think he's worth a $50M firing. That said, I'd love to see him stay at a non-traditional power and stick it to a Blue Blood ... just like Cig did by stiff-arming Penn State.

Beyond Kiffin, I can't see any other upgrade being available. Maybe Lanning??

@gthomas  - I mean, they could go off the range and aim for a Gruden, Saban, Meyer.....you get the idea.  There are possibilities for perceived upgrades but at $50mil just to get out of a contract?   The amount of money being wasted (regardless of it being donor or sponsored cash) is just amazing to me.

It makes you incredibly happy we have Cig because it sort of feels like we have been playing a game of musical chairs and landed on Cig right as the music stopped.

Lanning turned down Bama.  Don’t think he is moving except for maybe OSU.

@yothn If a school paid the  buyout, losing $50M would indeed be a major deal for an athletic department. But it seems boosters tend to pay most or all of the buyout (see Jimbo Fisher, Texas A&M), so the financial hit--if there is one--isn't significant.

Double good riddance if he's gone for good.  Most of the folks in South Bend figured he was sleeping with his secretary cause he was the biggest prick in the county.

I've despised that DB ever since he got that kid killed at ND and then acted all sanctimonious about it. Screw him and his weirdo vibe. Fake southern draw and who can forget the most cringy dance thing he did with the recruit.

I’m struggling with figuring out who psu can get who will be better than Franklin. Kelley isn’t better. Cig and Freeman aren’t going. If Clark Lea is willing to leave his Alma mater it would likely be for a job like LSU. I don’t see any other options out there at the P4 ranks that would be a clearly better hire.
