agreed.  But we're getting older or at least I am. I have season tickets to ND , had them for IU.  Used to be at a game every weekend it seemed like. Now since Covid really , I enjoy watching some from home now.  Let the 20/30 something's enjoy the in person experience... the game day experience certainly has changed over the years.  Tailgates are like epic events compared to what they were when I was a kid .. literally open the trunk up and have a sandwich out of it and then go into the game. Now all day parties. Elaborate.  And I've been a part of it. I think there was a thread before the season started about tailgates.  I put just a few examples of the ones I've thrown over the years.  Man the money I've spent on those.

@mushroomgod He is my least favorite thing about games. Especially with a mascot now, you do not need some one yelling at you constantly. Like chill, bro. IU always has some big alumni back for games, I would much rather get a quick interview with them than have what we have now.

It is loud. And it will get worse when they upgrade it.  I go to a lot of ND games. It's worse there since they upgraded and few years back.  Loud music lights .. they at least do feature their band quite a bit so .. and as far as the programs yeah, have to use your phone.

sorry Walt.

TV is great for a lot of things.  But ultimately it affects everything it touches, and ruins some things.  The in person viewing experience at college football games is one of those things.  The big games are still worth attending.  The trash games not so much.

The NFL is worse wrt TV time.

Score --> TV timeout.

Come back and do a kickoff --> TV timeout.

At least that's how it was when I stopped watching it from boredom.

And like I said above, he's not there for you or me.  He's there for the people that aren't die hard football fans.

@gros-louis and that's important! Personally, I like Griffin. I think he does a good job and brings some energy. Sure, there are areas that need to be tightened up and I'm down to bring in new segments/interviews/etc, but I definitely think Griffin is a positive to the experience

I am pretty tough on IU's game day experience. I agree on a lot of the stuff that is brought up by the OP.

1. Bigger programs come with different approaches. Ohio State lets their band do a lot of the heavy lifting. They have some promotions and they do have an in-game Emcee, but she is not as active as IU's. Penn State is like a rock concert, especially during warmups. I don't recall them having an emcee, but the music is so much you couldn't tell.

2. Get used to the ads, they are not going away.

3. I am a hard copy program/media guide person myself as they are keep sakes and make looking up stuff a lot easier than looking it up on your phone or tablet. But I get it's a low return item. IU doesn't even give media members hard copies of the record book outside of a couple people. No paper game note either. It's a cost/environmental thing. It's a lot cheaper to create a PDF and post it than print a whole book of color pages 15,000+ times a week.

4. IU's website has been had bad information lately. The stats link for last game was for the Michigan game. However, they usually do a good job of posting the entire stat book in their recaps.

5. I won't tell people what to do with their money, but the light non-con slate will probably become a thing of the past sooner rather than later. The deadline for a new playoff format is December 1st and the Big Ten will follow whatever gets them the most teams in. There are rumors that the conference will add two teams down the road and that could mean 10 conference games (5 home/5 away). Even at 18 teams, I can see them moving to 10 conference games. So all the complaining about these games is like screaming into the void.

Thank goodness for your #5 point.  It's been crazy that college football has allowed scheduling to be controlled by the need to get to 6 wins and be bowl eligible.  It makes sense to have one game that amounts to an exhibition.  After that, there should be disincentives, rather than incentives, to schedule the Kennesaw States of the world.  The standard should be to play regional rivals in NC.

I'm all about just watching the football.  On college gamedays I'll tape a bunch of games and then alternate watching them, cutting out the pregame & TOs.  And even the huddles.  Works like a charm.  Only thing is you have to start at the beginning and avoid seeing/hearing the results ahead of time....

@gros-louis People like being yelled at? There's a better way to do it. I have plenty of regular people complain about it too.

@mushroomgod A lot of these smaller programs rely on these games to fund their department. Many programs just would cease to exist and that is not a good thing either.

You may have more experience at OSU than I do, because before last year, I hadn't been in many years.  But my takeaways from last year's experience were:

  • The sound system is MUCH louder. I heard from OSU fans around me that it was much louder than usual. Heard the same from people that were there this past weekend.
  • They had 2 emcees, one for on-field introductions of former players and such and then another 'hype-man' who was a local urban radio DJ. He talked a lot.
  • The OSU band is awesome...for pregame.  During the game, they didn't offer much, didn't play all that much or were drowned out by the canned music. There was no coordination in the game script for them to play.  They played whenever...similar to how our band is.  Lots of overlapping of the canned music between plays and the band playing.

I'm all for playing better non-con teams.

I do think we should keep in mind that it takes some time to be a program ready to play big non-con games.

Cig is still in the early stages of building a program.  This is just season two after inheriting a program that had just won three conference games in three years and has one of the worst histories in D1 football.

Our players are still relatively new to the new program and we are still heavy in the portal -- we have more of a challenge to get everyone integrated/gel'ed.  And frankly, we still have a pretty modest player payroll and a team of mostly 3*'s.

These easier non-con games are helpful for us as we prep for conference play.  We saw it pan out well last year and hopefully we see the same this year (we need to improve these next two games...).  I do understand they're boring and we get some flack for them.

I do want better non-con games and I think those are coming.  All I am saying is I think we can give Cig and staff a break for the first few years of their tenure.  They are scheduling strategically.

@gros-louis They can keep running him out there. He threw off the vibe with the mascot early and with a mascot it's redundant to have a "yell leader". But I don't write the checks at IU. If they feel like whatever they pay him is worth it, bless their hearts

@gros-louis I must have not noticed the Emcees then, which I am more than OK with. It should be more of an in-game host anyway.

Last year was the first time OSU acted like IU was a serious game. It was the loudest I have heard that place and I have been their at least a half dozen times. The band does the same things every game, there's a reason they are The Best Damn Band in the Land.

If he was an in-game host, it would be much more tolerable. I have been to 15 of the 18 Big Ten stadiums and IU just seems like they throw stuff together and hope it works. Some of it is really good, some of it is really bad.
