The state of Florida is all yours, James. Napier just got shitcanned, and Norvell and McDaniel are next.

Take your pick.

Coaching Carousel Predictions

The timing is lining up for Franklin to take the Florida job much sooner than would be normal.  I think he ends up there.

Penn State... I think they hire Matt Rhule.

LSU...I think they'll fire Brian Kelly, and will hire an NFL guy.  Maybe Joe Brady will come back to college as a head coach?

Florida State... I think they'll fire Norvell.  And will hire Deion, assuming he's healthy.

@iunorth Can you really fire Franklin to hire Matt Rhule? Looking at his resume, think he really only had 2 good seasons at Temple and 1 good one at Baylor. Then was awful with the Panthers and very OK with NB. Nothing to get excited about in the NIL/Xfer Portal/playoff period we are in now. I think Rhule would be greeted with a big, WTF from the fan base.

Franklin is really a pretty good hire for Florida.  They need a program builder to stabilize things.

Agree Rhule seems most likely for PSU.  Underwhelming for them?  Yes.  But not my problem!  Brian Kelly would actually be a good hire for PSU.

Not sure FSU has the money right now to move on from Norvell with his $55M buyout.

There are a lot more coach openings than good coachers.  Locking down Cig was smart.

@tammany I do feel quite a lot more comfortable after the contract restructuring.  But I still don't think money is what determines whether he stays at IU or not.  The gesture and support probably means more to Cignetti, than the actual dollar amounts.

So I hope that none of these other programs push the right buttons with Cignetti, because there are a few of them that will figure the money side out if they can get him to the table.

@iunorth Agree nothing is 100%, but his video was enough that I'm not going to worry about it.  He went out of his way to be clear on his intentions.  I'm sure he/his agent still get calls and feelers all the time -- as you know it never stops.

I guess the only Tier I job that might come open and may worry me a little is UM.  But, that job isn't open and I'm not sure they would go for him.

Anyways, I feel about as good as one can as a fan of a non-trad FB program with a great coach.

Interestingly, in the presser today Cig said the new contract came together in less than 48 hours.  Scott walked into Cig's office Tuesday, Scott said I want to do this and I'll talk with your agent, and Cig said okay.  The comfort level here is very high, which is obviously great.  This wasn't some drawn out negotiation where it took awhile for demands to be met.

McDaniel?  Who is that?

So Penn State fires Franklin due to his inability to beat ranked opponents and hires Rhule, who is 2-23 vs ranked opponents?  Make it make sense.

@kelly_32 would be kinda funny.  Guy who can’t win top-10 games to a guy who struggles with top-25 games.

After what Cig has done, there will be some schools looking at the lower tier coaches that are killing it. Perhaps the JMU guy again?

@tammany How that played out with the new contract...I could read a couple different ways.  That he appreciates the gesture, that it was impactful and will create loyalty with Cig, etc... Or that Cig wasn't asking for it, but isn't gonna turn down more money.

In the end, probably best to choose your mindset.  Not worth worrying about until there's something to worry about.

I just don't think in today's cut throat world, that the contract, or even that video, means a mega offer, that touches all the right buttons with Cig, for sure wouldn't compel him to leave.  The list of schools that might be looking this offseason could end up being historic.  Penn State, Florida, Florida State maybe, LSU maybe, Michigan maybe, Clemson maybe, is Sark safe at Texas if they lose a couple more games... Tons of programs that could offer pretty incredible packages.

Keep an eye out for this kid.  We had him for an official during the summer.

Coming next weekend

I really hope all the big name p4 coaches stay put and stop caving to the pressure of big name programs. If your school has the resources to pay you stay at places like Vanderbilt and Indiana and keep building there. Force these big schools to focus their poaching on the lower tier schools or go the coordinator route. I hope Lane, Lea, Campbell, and every name thrown out there for a “better” job stays home.

@iunorth Yea.  I'm quite sure the big openings and maybe the upcoming openings are calling and offering $10-15M more in NIL per year than we have.

I worry a lot for obvious reasons, but at some point I've got to throw my hands up and say it looks like he's staying.  Cig is down to <1% in the betting markets for the PSU job and he's not on the board right now for UF.  So it appears he's turned down the Tier II jobs.  Do we have to fend off some Tier I schools like UM, TX, or LSU someday?  Maybe.  Not sure he's a fit with any of those except UM, and they may not see him as a fit.

It's kinda weird, but if you're at a program ranked #2 with the best win the CFB at the moment... that's not a bad spot.

Anyways, we can only guess.  At least things have trended positively the past week.

If some program ups the ante, I could see Mark Cuban and the Cook family stepping in to stop it.  I don’t think Cig is all about the money.  It’s also about cultural fit and his video reiterates that his family loves the community and state and the administrative support.
