I’m surprised not one reporter brought this up to Cig. I’m not sure if they have some kind of agreement not to discuss these topics in press conferences, but it was disappointing to not have the subject broached after watching a two minute clip of Matt Rhule responding to the question. If Rhule can answer the question with stronger ties than Cig that shouldn’t be an off limits question at IU.
Some of our local media guys are very good. But overall, IU media are house cats that don't ask many hard questions.
My guess is the question will come from someone outside the IU bubble such as an Indy news sports dude like an Anthony Calhoun or perhaps a national person in some other setting.
I could be wrong. Just a guess.
At some point, whether it’s now to PSU or somewhere else, Cig is gone. Just imagine what he could do at a blueblood program with top notch resources (including his own bottom line). He could take that team to the playoffs EVERY YEAR.
He's already taking us to the playoffs every year. The only thing another school can offer him that we can't is a fertile recruiting hotbed like Florida or Texas, but that isn't necessary for success these days. The world has changed. We are currently a better job than PSU. If he leaves for that job, he's dumber than I thought.

I try to avoid having the emotional reaction to what Rece said and to resist what he's saying just because I don't want Cignetti to leave. But I think I disagree with him about his legacy if he were to go to a PSU or Alabama and win there. I don't think that would cement his historical legacy the way Rece suggests. Especially considering how little time he has left (JoePa was there like 40 years), he'll never supplant Paterno and he wouldn't supplant Bear Bryant or Saban if he went to Alabama. It wouldn't be "cute" if he stayed at IU and he won and they put up a statute. At IU he'd cement his individual greatness on a national level in a way that he probably now couldn't elsewhere.

I think that's the larger point of the other two pundits. To do it at IU would be greater than if he stepped into a plug and play perennial powerhouse and did it there. There it's expected...a continuation of what has already been and God help you if you don't, as there is little in the way of good will to exchange if a 7-5 or 8-4 season happens.

Whoever gets the job at PSU has a cakewalk schedule next year. Only tough game they have is Michigan at the big house. Rhule might be licking his chips seeing that schedule.
Did anybody else think Cig looked particularly grumpy at the presser today? And even mentioned press creating issues although in a bit of a joking manner.
I wondered if he was already tired of hearing the speculation, as if his personal decisions are the worlds business even before he has made them.
Of course, he could end the speculation...
He seemed like his usual self. Notably proud of his guys.
He was that. Cool to hear comments on some he particularly singled out too.
@tammany agreed. He always looks a little grumpy, but that’s his personality and probably because the guy eats and sleeps football. It is always refreshing to hear him say great things about the players. I know those guys appreciate the shoutouts. Hemby and Jones got some really nice attaboys.

I dont think he cares about what the media says. He knows as much as the AD that we need to keep adding alumni investment. These national pundit conversations only heighten alumni awareness of the need to keep investing heavily. I hope he keeps quiet and stirs up concerns from fans to help drum up $ to make his job even easier.
@yothn I don’t necessarily care about the impact on the fans including myself as much as I do the distraction all the speculation can have on our team that is playing for a championship season. Cig has already said he talks to the team as little as possible. So, I think a public statement would go a long way in eliminating the outside distractions as they continue preparing week to week. Also, silence says a lot. Maybe they do feel they don’t need to address it, or maybe they are waiting until they have sealed up a new deal again. Not sure the reason, but I only see a public statement as a positive for the team and the anxiety of our players and their parents and recruits as to whether the coach will stay. All that recruiting momentum we just gained from the Oregon win seems to be tarnished by the speculation because you know recruits have to be asking the same question as to whether he will still be here if they pledge.
No, the recruits are not wondering if Cignetti will leave just because a few talking heads have said he should go to Penn State. It is idle, baseless speculation. Get a grip.

I would imagine that angle is covered. What he does or doesnt say to the press doesn't mean he isnt being more transparent to the team.
