@unclemark Cig said before the ND game last year that he isnt going anywhere, that was the clip where he said "why would I leave IU, its the emerging super power"

Coach poaching has always been the way of things for a program that experiences sudden success without the blue blood pedigree. Teams with blue blood pedigrees that are struggling will try and pry your guy away. But with the portal and NIL, the old arguments they used to be able to make aren't quite as convincing anymore. A top coach can win ANYWHERE these days, and while challenging he can build something there as long as there is the commitment up and down the board. I think CCC believes he has it here and I think and hope he will stay.

I get it, it's difficult because as Hoosier fans this is something we've never had to consider when it comes to the FB program...but the gloom and doom I see from a few in this thread and the other reminds me of:

A good friend will bail you out of jail, but your best friend will be sitting next to you in the cell saying "that was f***ing awesome"

Woah. LOL

And I always thought he was a pretty good coach. Bobby Johnson left Vanderbilt in a pretty good state compared to when he arrived. But Franklin upped it to 9 win seasons from 5-6, 6-5 levels, and 2-10 the year prior to his arrival.

Keep Cig...!

I look at him a lot like I view Crean: he inherited a dumpster fire, brought them back to a high level, but never could get the breakthrough needed to get to the top. Then, once he had a down period, any goodwill he might have built up over time evaporated.

When James Franklin led teams lose, they go on historic like collapses. Remember when IU beat them in 2020, they then lost 6 straight.  It needs to be studied.

I've been told repeatedly that 2020 didn't count

This has Matt Rhule written all over it.  Played there.  Was hired by Kraft at Temple.  Cig will get another raise, his assistants might too.

I can't fathom Haines is our DC next year though.  With all of the coaching carousel stuff that's going to happen (IS happening!) this year, he'll be a HC somewhere next year, if he wants it.

Programs would be crazy not to consider Haines for HC jobs.  He's so damn good.

I think there is a good chance we'll hire a good replacement.  Is what is it -- part of CFB is dealing with your star coordinators getting big opportunities.

There was a rumor circulating that Pat Craft and James Franklin had a verbal altercation in front of the team. If Craft fired him over that how does he expect to have a personality like Cigs roaming the sidelines? I could only imagine how that conversation would go. To even confront your head coach in front of his team is utterly absurd. What alpha coach would put up with that? I see more of a Matt Rhule personality dealing with that long before a Cignetti.

Wow, if that happened that is very interesting.

Cig has his program here built up exactly how he wants it with great support and alignment from IU, notably up to the President and other key folks.  I think that is a pretty big part of the success here and I would guess the bigger football programs are more like our bball program -- lots of pressure and meddling from outsiders that is almost always a negative impact.

Normally I don’t give any credibility to things I read on Twitter, but this was noted as coming from Pete Thamel and he was tagged on the post. That still doesn’t mean it’s true, but there does seem to be some legitimacy there. There was also a rumor that Adidas was involved in his firing and offered to pay his buyout weeks ago. That one I’m less sure about and for now am leaning towards that being fake news.

@olympian97 Thanks.  Thamel… legit.

And yea, Adidas makes uniforms, shoes, and merch — they don’t make major athletic dept decisions lol.

@tammany Another factor... no matter how much success Cignetti has at IU, he'll always be in the "proving everyone wrong" stage.  And I kind of think that fits his personality, he likes it, and with that feeling and dynamic, comes less outside pressure for him to win every single game.  At PSU, he'd be instantly expected to win National Titles.  I don't think those expectations would scare Cig away from PSU, but the whole approach and mentality would... the expectations PSU would have, would take away a huge part of his personality and approach.

Having said all that... it ain't easy turning down all the money, and all the things that PSU would offer someone like Cignetti.  He's a football guy... when they come with the salary, the budget for guys like Haines and Shanahan to take the next step in their careers and come be coordinators at PSU...the stadium, set to get three quarters of a BILLION dollar facelift, it'll all be very impressive...  I wouldn't be shocked to wake up the day after our season ends to read headlines..."Penn State too good of an opportunity to pass up for Cignetti."

So... like with our current team, that's a few key injuries away from coming down to earth a little bit... I'll just enjoy the ride while its happening.  Even if he stays, I still question how sustainable THIS level of success is for him, at IU.  When the impactful JMU guys leave, after this year, can he replicate what he's doing now?

@bradstevens I find hope in that Cignetti seems to value continuity in his coaching. I say that because of all the JMU players and assistants he brought with him. USA Today has an article today in support of the idea that Cignetti would be foolish to leave and suggest Ohio State's previous coach would be a better choice.

@iunorth The JMU kids are just guys his program developed.  The next JMU guys are kids who joined the program last year and this year.

I honestly don’t think they will offer a materially different amount for Cig and staff.  They do have more NIL, but they aren’t a top tier money program.  And yea the stadium is big with a very good atmosphere, but I doubt that is a top factor.

PSU is a very good job and I can’t say for sure he would turn it down.  I just don’t think it’s overwhelmingly amazing like OSU, Texas, Georgia, Michigan, etc.

You're sounding Daunted!! lol

So a few things...Penn State can't wait until our season is over to fill that job and I see 0% chance he'd bail on this team.

As for the sustainability/JMU aspect...the dude has won everywhere he's been.  He didn't just win at JMU...he recruits the right guys and he coaches and develops them.  That will continue as long as our NIL coffers are plentiful.

I do worry about having to replace potentially TWO coordinators this offseason. And not just the coordinators, but who do they take with them?
