It's not just the salary nor the assistants.  Our facilities pale in comparison to theirs. That's a big deal in the recruiting world.  Not to mention a stadium that seats 107k.

None of the IU power brokers (Dolson, Whitten, the BoT) are going to say No to anything reasonable. Cig is at the pinnacle of the profession, and he's doing it where no one thought it was possible. If need be, sit him across the table from one of the big money people and dare them to tell him No. I doubt there are many who will.

I've been wrong about many things many times, but I just don't see Cig making another move -- especially this quick -- to go somewhere else just to achieve what he's already done here.

If he weren't FROM Pennsylvania, I wouldn't sweat it at all.  Anybody know where his wife is from?

No idea, but Cig has said -- unprompted-- almost from day one how much she likes it here. I think she's decided she's staying.

Why don’t we just write a blank check and end all this BS.
The university has the resources to do it.Don’t need this distraction for the next two months.

if he’s serious about wanting to end his career here he will want to put an end to all the speculation.

This team has a legitimate shot at the national championship and teams are not going to stop this until they have reason to.

I think a new contract will happen during the bye week between Wisconsin and Purdue.

Not requested, not required. I look for Cig to make statement at or near the end of the season that he intends for this to be his last job.

for the sake of the discussion, let’s assume IU makes a deep playoff run

Not for nothing, but hiring a coach coming off a national title run (like final 4 or better) is also a dicey situation because of the transfer portal.  I think the portal window opens/closes before the playoffs finish.

that would be an awfully big hassle when it comes to players leaving and new ones coming in. Might basically be forgoing the next year for the coach to get their guys in.

Penn St.'s sales pitch is this: you can't win a national title at IU, but you can at PSU. And we are a football school where you will never be second fiddle to basketball, and we will always sell out 107K seats. Do you want to be the second coming of Bill Snyder or do you want a shot at being the next Nick Saban?

I hope it doesn't work.  In fact, if it does, I might stop watching college sports altogether.

how does that work if we win a national title this year? 😁 if we win out and beat osu in the B1G title game there will be little doubt we are capable. Also, I think the days of being second fiddle to basketball are over. Devries is really going to have to significantly transform the basketball program to be on the football teams level. The only advantage I see is psu is easier to recruit and much bigger atmosphere. I think Cig has everything he needs right in Bloomington. Psu can make their sales pitch, but they may have a better chance with Haines. I don’t think they would be smart enough to hire Haines though, because their fans will say you don’t spend 50 mil to fire a coach to take a chance on an unproven coordinator. Haines is Dan Lanning Jr. and he is on our coaching staff.

Yeah, Im worried about losing Haines to someone. As well as Cig. Penn State is about the only job I could see Cig leaving for. Hed be the biggest cheese of all the big cheeses in college football. But if we keep Cig, he will know how to hire coordinators. Haines is so good though.

Just think, we shouldve LET Penn State hire Haines last winter. James Franklin would still be their coach. Grin

And at Penn State theyre used to coaches going until their 80s. So Cig is a youngster.

I guarantee you Cignetti doesn’t think he can’t win a title at IU with the proper commitment. He has a contending team this year and recruiting will only continue to get better the more IU wins.

How cool would it be if Cig comes to the MSU press conference tomorrow and part of his opening statement declares to the world he is not taking any other jobs and will be at Indiana next year? Hey, I know that is a dream, but that would reduce a lot of anxiety and take a lot of the constant distractions for this team away just as the raise did last year. Lanning pretty much did that. So, Cig doing it would mean so much to the fans. If there’s anything he wants in negotiation let’s make it happen. Plans for a new press box? Let’s get plans drawn up and approved.

We aren’t going to be able to hang onto Haines and Shanahan forever. They will both get head coaching looks sooner than later.

That's probably what they'll say and they'll give him NIL commitments.

Some counters just for fun as a homer IU fan:

IU just won at Autzen vs a #2/3 team and we've got the best win in CFB right now.  That means we can win anywhere vs. anyone.  Not saying we will, but we can.

We've got the 5th best national title odds right now.  Insane to say, but true.

Of course PSU is a bigger program, but is it really a place to go to win national titles?  They have two natties from a bygone era -- 1982 and 1986.  This is not a program that really sets up coaches to win it all like an LSU, OSU, or Bama, nor are they a mega money program like Texas or Oregon.  They're a Tier 2 program in the the middle of nowhere PA (literally -- 2.5 hours from Pittsburgh, and it's a tiny town) with a big stadium.

As I've said I think Cig stays, he's built something from scratch here that's working at a high level that doesn't make sense to leave.  We can pay Cig and his staff as much as PSU would, and while we probably can't match their NIL, we can probably close the gap such that the difference isn't too material.

Anyways, we'll see.  This doesn't keep me up at night.
