Saw where 4 major predictors have him as #2 right now and one has him in the top spot...don't have the exact stats but its something like 41/44 for 560 with 10 TDs last two games.....yikes. He's picked it up in a major way. Congrats to him, and more evidence of how great this staff is.....
Yeah, it appears that picking up Whitmer was a boon. FM said he uses the routine for preparing for a game from ones Whitmer learned from pros like Hebert, etc.
I'd like to see the Hoosiers at least get through the Oregon game before the Heisman talk begins. Through game 4 I'm very pleased with what I'm seeing from Fernando.

A writer from SI came out today with a top 5 of Mateer; Aguilar; Moore; Mendoza; and Beck, but Beck's game v. Florida was mediocre stat-wise, and I haven't seen Aguliar that high elsewhere.
If Mateer wins it he will have earned it. They have road games left at TX; TENN; Missouri; and LSU plus Bama & Ole Miss at home. OK could probably lose 2 and still be in it; 3 would probably be too many losses.
I also feel like Mendoza could stay in it with two close losses to Oregon & PSU if Mendoza played well.
If it came to pass it would be huge for IU football....unfortunately, not many remember who comes in 2nd. That missed FG v. Purdue still hurts.....

I think for Fernando to get it, he'll need to have a big performance in a win at Oregon or PSU. Tall order, but that would get finicky voters' attention.
Personally, I don't care much on the Heisman. I'm just interested in the old wins/losses this year.
I wonder how much getting a Heisman winner would really help though. Recruiting will likely continue to be about the $$ and we can't compete with schools that have wealthy donors, like Texas Tech, that are giving recruits/players mega funds.
On the flip side, our NIL has increased so much that it has likely helped us pass schools that were previous seen as having better program prestige. There's just only so far up you can go in recruiting when you're getting outbid.

I was looking at the worst-case scenario for us for him to still be in contention. If we went 11-1, he'd probably win it!!
@hoosiers94 Yeah count me in as concerned about Iowa. The coaches and senior team leaders are going to have to push the squad against having any sort of letdown as Kinnick is a tough place to play. If Mendoza can do his thing on the road against Iowa and Oregon, he will recruit more believers.
My prediction: If Indiana finishes 11-1 (split Oregon/Penn State, beat every other team), Mendoza wins the Heisman.
I think it’s way early to think about this, but fwiw, Mateer is out for about a month due to hand surgery.
@tammany Big bummer for Oklahoma on that front. I didnt get the heisman hope for Mateer (too many turnovers, not enough production) but fun guy to watch. Luckily he should only miss two games, but one of those is against Texas...
