I understand being kind of simplistic on offense in the season opener, but this seemed over the top, no? It was Iowa-esque…
Theories as to why?
You need to beat inferior opponents convincingly to stay in the CFB playoff hunt. IU didn’t do that.

Objection, non-responsive…

No you don’t. If they win 10 or 11 games they’ll be in the hunt. If not, they won’t. This game won’t have any bearing.
They dialed up a bunch of shots for Mendoza today. He missed most of them, Cooper dropped one.
Not sure what the OP is talking about.

conservative and vanilla maybe
but whatever plays that are called, they still need to be executed
there's a lot to clean up
The red zone stuff was game-planning for Penn State.
@carramrod Primarily the red zone…
You need to be able to pound the ball in against Old Dominion without resorting to gadgetry and exposing too much of the playbook.
The setup in the backfield seemed like gadgetry in itself. I hope we don't see it the rest of the way.
Must be something to it, or Coach wouldn't use it though. 🙁
I also thought the play calling was vanilla.
although I noticed multiple possessions around half time where a WR was WIIIIIIDE open deep that FM apparently didn’t see.
to be real though, if they played as cleanly as they did last year, the game would’ve been 56-0.
it reminds me (in reverse) of the Indiana State game a couple years ago where we absolutely thrashed them in stats/score, but I remember it not being”feeling” like that kind of win. Here, it wasn’t nearly as close as the score. But those failures to finish and other mistakes could’ve conceivably cost them the game.
It is the first game with a lot of new pieces. The good news is that there is a LOT to work on.
I do wonder where the back shoulder pass was. Last year IU lived on it. Did Tino take it to UCLA with him?
Have to be able to win the trenches against Old Dominion. Not being able to get one yard when all that is needed is to out muscle them in concerning. I know its game one, but it shows how special Rourke was last year in this offense. I almost think Mendoza struggled because he WASN'T scrambling all game like he did all year at Cal. Being sacked 41 times and running for your life is certainly different from having ample time in the pocket. He will be serviceable over these next couple games, and then we will know the direction of the season on the night we play Illinois.
@paterade I agree about Rourke being special. FM might have talent but he didn’t look like a “gamer” today like CR did from the jump last year. We’ll see.
@paterade Mendoza definitely didn't look comfortable in the pocket, although it was fairly clean today. I was our HS QB, and I know all about "happy feet"...but it looked more like he expected to run vs. needing to run. The pass pro was good today IMO. Its the first game, and I fully expect the coaches will correct the issues on BOTH sides of the ball.
