Kelly should do the token 'hunt for work' enough to satisfy his buyout offset language.
And enjoy retirement.
I'm sure he wouldn't mind telling LSU "I'm seen as too much of an asshole. You guys poisoned the well. Nobody will hire me at a reasonable salary."

@openwheel Is that generally a requirement in these buyouts: You have to look for a job? Seems odd, here's 12 mill a year, but you've got to be seeking other employment? Sounds more like unemployment!
I'm sure Kelly is practicing his Michigan accent in front of the mirror at this very moment.I don't see that happening ... I heard they were taking to Brian Kelly. Go for it. Will just make it all the easier to beat UM

James Franklin had an offset clause, where the Penn State buyout per year was reduced by whatever he was earning. But since he was getting close to what he had been earning, with his new Virginia Tech job, he negotiated a much smaller total number with Penn State for a one-time 9 million payout. So now they owe him nothing and his VT salary doesn't offset any money from Penn State.
Jimbo Fisher is the famous 'no offset' clause. Texas A&M owe him the FULL (huge) amount even if he gets another high paying job.
The internet has posts saying the language in Brian Kelly's contract has an offset clause. They do owe him the full 58 million, BUT it clearly states he has a 'reasonable' duty to look for employment, and blah blah offsetting. So if they for example owe him 7 million a year and he gets a 3 million job they still owe him 4 per year. He could try like Franklin and negotiate a buyout where it's just all finished then.
@openwheel I thought they all would deduct pay from a new gig from the payout, I just never heard that they were required to seek reasonable employment opps.

I think most buyouts reduce by the amount you earn at your next job. So of course they want to be sure you are actually trying to get another job.

Typical Duty to Mitigate provisions require a good faith effort to find another job, but “good faith” is very much in the eye of the beholder. Even then, LSU will owe him the different between what he earns elsewhere and what they owe him, since he was fired without cause (as defined in his agreement).
He’s going to find tough sledding in the upper half of the P4 given his reputation as both unlikeable as disdainful of recruiting. You’re right, he needs to enjoy his very well funded retirement.
@hurryinghoosiers Oh, I totally get why the school would like for them to look for another job, I just assumed it was at the individual's discretion, as to what jobs they might be interested in, and I think it is.
I just don't see Michigan hiring a guy with no HC experience to take over that dumpster fire of a situation.

Agree. They’ll get a proven guy who’’s been a head coach. Sounds like Ross is heavily involved and that Manual may be the next casualty.
@jackskip23 We'll see. It was looking like it was happening yesterday and it didn't. Maybe eventually, but I don't know if it's imminent.
Maybe Michigan will go a half dozen or more coaches turning them down before they get their - 'first choice!'. Like Penn State. LOL
They can't grab ex-coordinators under Harbaugh because the sentiment among fans seems to be that he poisoned the well.

Haines isn’t leaving for the cheaters
Michigan is a toxic place. I think it’s the dirtiest program in the country and it’s not particularly close right now. Who else cheats on field and covers up their HC impregnating staffers? They are worse than SEC schools we all laughed about for years
Whoever takes the Michigan job will not be there for long but they will make a pretty penny. I can’t imagine anyone with promise wanting to work there, it doesn’t even sound like their AD is going to lose his job

BK is 64 years old - retirement age. I wonder how that factors in to how hard he has to pursue a job?
I’d retire to Florida and spend the rest of my life with the grandkids and on the golf course.
