What happened to Franke on the initial kickoff? I was at the game but only saw he was on the ground after the play? I watched the replay and they just said he was hurt?

Franke’s very first kickoff on Saturday was a line drive that came down around the 10 yard line. I thought: “That’s weird. He always kicks out of the endzone.”
I looked at the 35 yard line and saw he was down on the ground. He wasn’t even in on the play. Have to think he pulled something in his kicking leg during the kick. Hamstring? Or possibly tore something in his plant leg. It clearly affected the kick so it happened either when he planted his foot or was swinging his leg.
Non contact injuries usually arent great, losing Franke would be a massive loss. We dont have a lot of leg strength in our kicking unit, and Franke is one of the best in the country at booming them out. Those 58 yard FGs against Oregon were also pretty awesome... Not a lot of college teams have guys who they could trust with that distance. That could be a difference maker come playoff time.
Just curious, but do specialists participate in the strength and conditioning program like the other players? We may need to reevaluate what we do with them from a stretching and/or strength perspective because both Mitch and Franke have had some sort of injuries this season. Hopefully it wasn’t a knee or anything serious. His kicks are really important to limiting opportunities for big plays on special teams.

I’m sure that they participate and that their programs are geared to best help their bodies kick effectively.
Who kicked the rest of the game? I didn’t notice a huge drop off….

Quinn Warren came in and kicked. He's McCarthys backup. Kid is like 6'6 and did a good job booting the ball deep. Cig did a great job building depth on this team. He has plenty experience in the role as he played in that capacity (KO specialist) for IU last year.
It looked like he pulled something. They do participate in the S&C program. However, maybe they need to re-evaluate since this is three injuries on KO in 2 years.
Coach said he was questionable for Maryland. He is a great weapon on touchback and long fg. But we likely don't need him in the near future.

Radicic also kicked off, at least once
@thehoosierhuddle hopefully it is something he can get over in a few weeks. We can get by without his kick offs until the Big Ten Championship game. Then it would be great to get him back.
@walt542 I agree. Don't under sell his ability to hit long field goals as well. Radicic has been great, but Franke seems to have a longer range

I think it's too early to dismiss Penn State. In fact, I might not dismiss them until after we beat them. Too much talent...not sure what went wrong there. Although OSU could destroy their will Saturday, I guess.
@gros-louis Agree. PSU definitely has a ton of talent and playing at their place won't be easy.
