It’s never been more important to be good at football. IU was in extreme danger of being left behind. Now they at least have an argument to be included in a Super League.
A super league would stink. Hope it doesn’t happen, but who knows.
Regardless, for the next media rights and grant of rights negotiations, IU is so much of a better spot than we were two years ago. Thank goodness.
The money comes from TV revenue, and the Big Boys will still claim “why should we share that revenue with teams/conferences that don’t help/pay to generate it?”
They don’t realize that in 5 years, a conference of only Blue Bloods (Michigan, OSU, Penn State, USC, Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Florida, Oklahoma, Texas) becomes a Big 2 and 8 non-earners.
The “new” professional college football at least allows the schools willing to invest, and capable of scouting coaches and talent, to move up.
But in 10 years, if high school football is down 25-30%, it won’t matter - when the foundation crumbles, the greatest structures fall.
@tammany I don't think a super league actually happens. People are forgetting the academic and research side of conferences and the amount of money that generates dwarfs football.
@myteamisonthefloor Yes, but there are more factors at play in this too. IU's postseason ratings were through the roof and there is an argument to be made that it's because they're new blood (also IU has a massive fan base). Having an NFL lite with the same teams over and over will get tired at some point.
Finally, your last point. Nobody talks about this and it's a huge piece. It's also why I am all for FBS having buy games and helping keep smaller programs afloat. If people don't think they'll have an opportunity at the college level (any level) the interest in high school football may dwindle.
The sport is at a nexus point. On the surface it looks like it's better than ever, but there are fissures forming.
- Strongly agree with your beliefs. HS FB and BB are the biggest weekly social events for the largest portion of the school calendar year in rural and small communities. Talk about 'culture shock' to America.
Wait, I thought soccer was replacing (american) football as the wildly popular sport?
I'm dreaming of the revenue soon to flow in to Indiana as a name in the sport.
Yeah, agree with the posts above. ( Except the football 'blue blood ' listing not having Indiana! )

@thehoosierhuddle high school football participation is already in serious decline because parents don’t want their kids getting creamed by kids who started training for the NFL the moment they got out of diapers
Powerhouse programs like IMG are creating college-lite teams that are just unsafe to play against for 165lb average athleticism linebackers
As you said, get rid of the scholarship opportunities and there will be even less interest in playing. People who want a super league would destroy the sport. Part of the fun in football is that there is usually at least one big upset a year.
How many people will ever forget Citadel beating South Carolina or App State beating Michigan? Or NIU and Marshall beating Notre Dame? College football is unique in that it doesn’t support cinderellas winning the whole thing, but on a per game basis beating a ranked team means a helluva lot more than it does in say college basketball. It’s basically a mini Super Bowl for that schools fan base.
@hoosierdaddy unfortunately College Basketball in general has become a 2 or 2.5 month sport because of the NCAA tournament.
I’ll always was IU because it’s IU, but I just don’t clear time out to watch a top 15 game like I would CFB. (Apparently this thought made one former member so mad he went crying to TOS)
@gros-louis What kind of update? He came back here to recruit for them and I told him to hit the bricks.
Who was it? I had no idea. I'm not on the hoops board much.@gros-louis What kind of update? He came back here to recruit for them and I told him to hit the bricks.
