@big-ryan I don't fault him, but I'd think there were still strong reasons to stay... if Cignetti and the staff wanted him. It may have just been a tough conversation, but if they wanted him, I think they could have gotten him more reps and of course with an injury, he could be starting in game 1. In all honesty and I said it multiple times throughout the year, while I think he is a superior runner to Fernando, I thought his passing and decision making looked suspect in limited PT this year. If he was the future, the guy I think made sense was Colton Joseph because of what a great runner he is and then you could have consistency of offense and styles from starter to backup. I hate to see him go and the timing sucks that this has to happen not even 24 hours after we win the NC, but it could be this was a mutual thing.
We recruited over him when we went after Hoover and others, which is all you really need to know here.
How is the Tyler Cherry rehab coming? Any insight?
I like Hoover a lot, but part of me worries about him surviving the type of hits that Fernando regularly brushed off (including last night), with Fernando being bigger and stronger.
Just look around at how many top teams needed to rely on a backup QB at some point.
Alberto is even smaller, but at least was experienced and tough-minded. Now the backup spot is a concern

I'm concerned about 33 career ints and 9 career lost fumbles; on the other hand, we've seen that Cignetti can fix just about anything.
There were few portal QBs better than Hoover. Mestemaker was always going to Ok St. Sorsby was not coming here for obvious reasons. Leavitt is healing from a serious injury.
Cig said that one of the guys that was disappointed with the portal additions was A Mendoza. His response was that he should be excited to compete for his job. We know the job is Hoover's to lose, so not surprising. Would be cool if Alberto got a year of experience then came back. Unlikely, but cool. I always wondered why we didn't see him throwing the ball more in garbage time.

He’s not returning once he leaves.
No surprise really.
@jackskip23 Pretty sure you don't know that. Did you say the same about Benson and Moore?
They like Cherry. Thought I heard/read he was slightly ahead of Alberto last season before getting hurt in the final week of the season. If they didn't think he had a future at IU, I'm pretty confident they wouldn't have made him a Student Coach this season. He's healed and smarter about the offense than ever. He'll battle Hoover and obviously has 2 years in the system as an advantage. As a long-time CG fan/supporter, I always liked Tyler more than Tayven. And we know for sure at this point Tayven is a capable starter if he can stay healthy.
Lastly, I'm not at all sure why anyone would think Alberto leaving isn't a 3-D chess move by Cig. Let him get a year of starting under his belt, then bring him back as an experienced QB for 2 more years. Maybe I'm dreaming, but I like that thought. A robust NIL war chest and clear opportunity makes stranger things possible.

No way of knowing that for sure.

Alberto always came in before Cherry so I'm not buying that Cherry was higher on the depth chart. It would be a major shock if Cherry beat out Hoover.
If Alberto performs well at his next stop and decides to portal there is no doubt we will make a strong push to get him. I think Alberto is making the best decision for his growth even though I selfishly want him to stay. Klatt had mentioned on one of his podcasts that most successful QBs in the NFL had at least 25 starts in college. Guys like Anthony Richardson have failed. So, he could essentially save himself a year by gaining his starting experience somewhere else. I hope he has a great season and comes back next year for a final season.

wouldn't he have 2 more seasons?
