As much as I would’ve liked to see Cooper and Ponds come back, them going to the NFL helps IU’s brand. We may get up to eight guys drafted and that’s going to be pretty amazing.

Cooper is making the right move and he deserves it.  The more guys we get drafted, the easier it is to recruit top talent, like Cooper.

With Marsh, Becker, Tyler Morris, and Shazz Preston, we have a very veteran front line staff at wideout.  Behind them is young yet high-end talent like LeBron Bond, Davion Chandler and Lavar Keys.

@kelly_32 It certainly does help the brand and clout of the program. I always jokingly say they should also look at IU's varsity club or whatever donation avenue you take for a tax break and donate that amount back to IU.

I just hope like hell these players and their agents/handlers are handling the windfalls they've gotten properly and with a view toward long term wealth building and security.

@unclemark - I believe schools are also giving a lot more financial education to these kids due to NIL.  Not that everyone is perfect, but I feel like the current generation is much less likely to blow quick lump sums of money earned based on a lack of understanding the future impacts.  It was rampant in pro sports back in the day but its decreased quite a bit.

Yes, that's my understanding as well, and good on the schools for providing the resources. I've been conditioned by the horror stories of pro prospects blowing everything and ending up bankrupt. I don't blame the kids as much as their "crews."

@cg-paul sort of what I expected with our signings. In Becker and Marsh, we have a couple killers and then promising guys in the other portal kid (Tulane?), Bond and another player that got some PT who's name escapes me. I was surprised we hadn't hear on Cooper earlier, because those moves told me they thought he was leaving.

And, I think it was probably the correct time. His stock has got to be pretty high right now, so risking injury, etc.... I don't think makes sense. Hope he and Sarratt kill it in the combines and NFL! You know they're going to represent IU well! Go Hoosiers!

My thinking is if Coop is getting a 2nd day grade, he absolutely is doing the right thing.

He's realistically not going to increase his draft stock a whole lot by coming back, and this accelerates the time until he gets to that 2nd contract, if he gets that far, which is where real money is made (in terms of NFL money is concerned).

Part of the Merchants Bank deal was for them to supply financial counseling for the kids I believe.

2nd round grade and has graduated. Correct move

So we have three scholarships to give out in the portal?

In that case, I’d take a veteran TE, an OL and another QB.

@kelly_32 I don’t know if IU needs another QB if Wilson is coming back and Cherry is in play. That spot may be a wait and see after spring ball.

I would go OL, TE and interior DL.

@spartans9312

I'm betting late 3rd or early 4th. I don't see anybody saying quite that low though. But if I had to wager I'd say 3rd round for Sarratt, 4th for Cooper.

I hope they go at least where projected though, or higher! No matter what, that's not bad, and teams will have enough invested to help develop them.

It's funny because two of those three positions you listed are the ones we have the most players for. But I understand your logic.

We have 9 interior DL, 6 of those 9 are going to be FR or RS/FR.  Being that's a position you need grown man strength to play, and we like to use a solid rotation; we could certainly use another elder from the portal.

For TE, we have 6 but all 6 are going to be FR or RS/FR and with minimal to no experience. That's an interesting spot. If we don't go after a TE, then that tells us they must really like Andrew and Blake.

OL is pretty obvious.  We have 13 total players and 7 of those 13 will be FR or RS/FR. Unless the staff feels great about a couple of the guys between Leibfried, Marek, Parker or Wilkin, I almost feel like we could use 2 OL who have experience.  We're really thin on experience if we have a couple injuries, and with 5 guys playing, it's more common than not to finish the season with a different looking starting 5.  Last year was more of an anomaly.

@yothn Yeah, with as critical as Nowakowski was, and I'm guessing how relatively inexpensive he was, not sure there was a guy that had a bigger impact, dollar for dollar. Really interesting how they moved him around in the CFP games and used him in a variety of areas and ways. I really think he was a huge part of our improved line play and he was my favorite Hoosier to watch after the catch. And just another good guy and football player. I would guess that's a role they will shore up.
