Yeah, I saw that was Beebee. He looked a little distressed.I thought it sounded a little high but that was on the Fox Sports weather graphic shown during the game and that number was repeated by Cignetti and others.
I could easily believe 130+ on field during the game…
Whichever RB played in the 4th quarter had a couple of close ups on TV and he appeared to be hyperventilating (unable to catch his breath)…
It’s a testament to our Strength and Conditioning Staff and the ultra hard work of or players that there weren’t any serious heat related injuries last Saturday.

The heat was so excessive that I think it affected our DL play, due to how quickly we were scoring. Late in the game Ladino & Tucker were struggling to make it to the sidelines.
The back of my Amazon van when I worked there got up to 140deg! I couldn’t stay in it for more than 10-15min at a time! Had to take many breaks! I’m sure IU’s staff and players were prepared for the heat. I’m sure they had extra fans/ice/drinks ready. I don’t recall anyone getting cramps on the field because of the heat!?

Tragic. It's also fortunate we didn't have any major medical crises (that I know of) in the stands or on the field.
There were many people in the stands that went down and required medical attention. The medical recovery area on the west side was packed. I saw one woman go down right in front of me while I was under the stands returning from the restroom. It was tough on people not prepared for it.A member of the Iowa band died from a heat-induced cardiac arrest

Also, the free water stands were a good idea but the lines were so long that many people just gave up on them. Then the stand on the west side broke and was spilling water all over the floor in the second half. They surely can do better that that.
Field appearance is way down the list of concerns for me. First and foremost is player safety. Grass is safer for a number of reasons. We had grass about 20 years ago and had real problems with it… Mid-field it looked like a poorly maintained high school field…, brown and worn…
This field is much better than that one…
The key to the temperature issue is for the Big Ten and the NCAA to pass a rule that any game played prior to October 1st can’t kickoff any earlier than 6pm…
That’ll probably never happen because there’s too much money coming from the TV networks to buck their start time decisions…
I like your idea on the kickoffs, but would move it to Sept. 15, or tie it to estimated on-field temps.

LOL. You guys think the networks are going to allow that to happen?

We all know you only care about the Benjamins, though. 😀
That is tragic…
It was only a matter of time however…
At some point playing in that type of heat is undoubtedly going to claim an athlete…
Once again, where are the organizations who pretend to be concerned about the student athletes?
I guess the Big Ten and the NCAA are too busy fronting for Michigan Football to be bothered by such trivial matters.
I prefer grass, grass is awesome, grass is football.
But from everything I hear, we have a very good field.
Just saying every time I've been down on an artificial field on a hot sunny day, you definitely can feel that heat radiating up at you more than any grass field I've ever been on. That's fine for mid-season or later.
Maybe they just need more swamp coolers on the sidelines. And/or the stands somehow. Glad we didn't hear of much heat stroking. Glad they made an effort to have water available.

There had to be some contributing health factors too. The poor kid hadn't even made it on the field yet when he collapsed.
I did see a tweet from Marching Hundred about a modified uniform or dress to account for the heat. I wonder if Iowa did something similar.
Hope is not optimism, which expects things to turn out well, but something rooted in the conviction that there is good worth working for. - Seamus Heaney, Irish poet and likely Hoosier basketball fan.

A friend of mine was 6'-6 and played sports, but was also in the band, and when we'd march in the summer parades in late July he had a hell of a time. We'd be standing at attention in the road on that hot asphalt in our uniforms and he was always the first to step out of line and go sit down. (Which our band director emphasized we should do if the heat gave us any problem.) Within a few minutes. Every time. Just couldn't hack the heat at all.
Otherwise he has seemed healthier than most, going strong at 60, never any heart or health issues I've ever heard of. But in high school always got lightheaded and had issues in the heat. Sometimes on days when he was the only one with issues. Not a doctor so I don't know why some don't do well in the heat but I am guessing not always a heart ailment. But my friend just always said he felt like he'd pass out, he didn't say anything about his heart.
Maybe the Iowa kid just was the type that mentally would always try to tough it out. Sad, feel for his family.
