The Hoosier Offense End Spring Practice on the Upswing

The Hoosier Offense End Spring Practice on the Upswing

The annual Cream & Crimson game, Indiana’s spring football game, was held on Friday night. A crisp evening at Memorial Stadium offered a glimpse at IU’s new-look offense under Kalen DeBoer. Multiple players were inactive or limited, such as Jack Tuttle, Stevie Scott, Ronnie Walker, Sampson James, Nick Westbrook, Whop Philyor and others. This presented an opportunity for some younger players like Kristian Pechac and Miles Marshall. Although the defense outplayed Indiana’s offense, several Hoosiers showed promising signs. Contrary to the defense’s stellar performance, Ramsey and the offense was victorious based on the scoring system:

Hoosier Defense Gets Their Takeaways During the Spring Game

Hoosier Defense Gets Their Takeaways During the Spring Game

When Coach Tom Allen called off the remainder of the spring game after 57 minutes of offense versus defense scrimmage action, the offensive unit came out on top by a score of 48-33. (Don’t jump to the conclusion that the defense had an off night because 21 of the 48 points the offense scored came in between quarters when the kickers were hitting uncontested field goals). The defense scored their points by way of takeaways (worth 5 points), three & outs (worth 3 points), and missed FGs (also worth 3 points). Despite leaving without the victory (and steak dinner), there was much to be happy about regarding new defensive coordinator Kane Wommack’s defensive unit.

Cream Tops Crimson as Hoosiers Close Spring Practice

Cream Tops Crimson as Hoosiers Close Spring Practice

Written by: TJ Inman (@TJHoosierHuddle)

On a windy but beautiful April Friday night in Bloomington, the Indiana Hoosiers concluded spring practice with the 2019 edition of the Spring Game between the Cream and Crimson squads. The offense, led by new offensive coordinator Kalen DeBoer wore the Cream uniforms while Kane Wommack’s defense led the Crimson squad. With Michael Penix recovering from a torn ACL and not cleared for full contact and Jack Tuttle out for the spring with an illness, redshirt junior Peyton Ramsey was the sole quarterback for the Hoosiers. The offense gained points through traditional scoring while the defense could accumulate points for three and outs, stops and takeaways. In between quarters, the Hoosiers ran 7-on-7 “skeleton drills” with Michael Penix at quarterback and Stevie Scott and Cole Gest participating at running back. Field goals were also kicked after the first and third quarters and counted for scoring.

Behind the Gaudy Numbers is an Ineffective Offense That Doomed IU

The Hoosiers fell to the Boilermakers in the Old Oaken Bucket game for the second year in a row and Purdue took home the bucket. Indiana was pretty unimpressive in the final regular season game and they didn’t seem to come out very ready to play. This is a game where the numbers lie because Indiana’s offense produced 487 yards compared to Purdue’s 440 but the Boilermakers came out with the win.

With bowl eligibility on the line, Indiana fell to Purdue 28-21, and the Old Oaken Bucket will remain with the Boilermakers for another year. The Hoosiers finish the season at 5-7, and Purdue is going bowling. In a must win game, the IU defense was undisciplined and unprepared, which lead to costly mistakes.

No Bucket, No Bowl as IU Falls 28-21

The Indiana Hoosiers and Purdue Boilermakers both entered today needing a victory to extend their season. For the second straight season, the Purdue Boilermakers were the better team and they waltzed out of Memorial Stadium still holding the Old Oaken Bucket. Rondale Moore led all players with 141 yards and two receiving touchdowns as Indiana’s offense put forth a pathetic display for much of the afternoon in a 28-21 losing effort. Peyton Ramsey was ineffective much of the game and the Indiana attack was as bland and stale as it could possibly be. Indiana ended up outgaining Purdue 487-440 but numbers do not tell an accurate story of this game.

Indiana's Offense Dented Michigan's Defense, but Ultimately Fell Short

The task at hand was always going to be daunting: the second top five ranked opponent of the 2018 season, and the eighth since the start of 2015. Michigan entered the game boasting one of the best defenses in the nation, with the statistics to back that up. Playing on the road against such a team would be no easy task. However, all things considered, the Indiana offense showed some promise. Despite an eventual 31-20 defeat, the Indiana offense flashed enough to get excited for the upcoming “bucket and a bowl” game against Purdue.

What Worked and What Didn't in Indiana's Loss to Michigan

What Worked and What Didn't in Indiana's Loss to Michigan

Written by Lauralys Shallow

Indiana lost 30-21 at No. 4 Michigan, and while nobody was expecting IU to pull off an upset in a hostile environment like the Big House, nobody expected IU to compete against Michigan the way they did today. IU was able to move the ball offensively against the best defense in the country, and they controlled the pace of the game in the first half. As usual, Indiana could not finish the game, and we are going to take a closer look at what worked and what didn’t work in today’s loss against the Wolverines.

Michigan Kicks Past Indiana

The Indiana Hoosiers entered today’s game at 5-5 and needing to win one of their final two contests to reach bowl eligibility. Despite a valiant effort in Ann Arbor, Michigan used five field goals from Jake Moody and strong second half defense to knock off the Indiana Hoosiers, 31-20. Indiana tested Michigan and kept things much closer than many expected against the #4 Maize and Blue but they will now need to win their regular season finish next Saturday against the Purdue Boilermakers to play in a bowl game.
