Hoosier Huddle's Big Ten Bowl Projections (Oct. 27, 2018)

Hoosier Huddle's Big Ten Bowl Projections (Oct. 27, 2018)

Turning the calendar to November means we are roughly one month from the end of the college football regular season. Every week brings a shifting in the standings and the potential bowl destinations. This article is not a reflection of where things currently stand. Rather, it is an attempt to project how things will finish. This is my best guess at the bowl game assignments for the Big Ten and of course, the Indiana Hoosiers (if there is to be one).

Hoosiers' Offense was Too Little Too Late as Comeback Bid Fell Short

Hoosiers' Offense was Too Little Too Late as Comeback Bid Fell Short

For Indiana’s offense, the story can be written in just four words: too little, too late. The Debord-led offense mounted a 22-point comeback in the 4th quarter to tie the game, but their inefficiency in the first 3 quarters had dug them too big of a hole to climb out. Ultimately, when Indiana had the ability to win the game on their final two drives, they faltered with a 3-and-out and a Peyton Ramsey strip sack.

Takeaways do Not Make Up for Lack of Pass Defense for Hoosiers

Takeaways do Not Make Up for Lack of Pass Defense for Hoosiers

Written By Lauralys Shallow

IU defense lacked pass coverage and a pass rush in its 38-31 loss to Minnesota. After tonight’s loss, IU’s record drops to below .500 for the first time this year at 4-5 (1-5), and the defense is a large reason why. Minnesota was without its starting quarterback, and redshirt freshman Tanner Morgan handled the IU defense with ease in the first half of his first career start. The secondary gave the receivers way too much room, and the defensive line could not pressure Morgan, and Minnesota dominated IU’s defense in the first half and took a commanding lead.

Comeback Falls Short in Minneapolis

 Comeback Falls Short in Minneapolis

Written by: TJ Inman (@TJHoosierHuddle)

The Indiana Hoosiers went to Minneapolis with their bowl hopes realistically on the line. However, they were outclassed early and fell behind until a frantic rally in the fourth quarter and fell to 4-5 on the season, falling 38-31 to the now 4-4 Minnesota Golden Gophers. Redshirt freshman Tanner Morgan, making his first collegiate start, completed 17 of 24 passes for 302 yards. After some early offensive success for Indiana resulted in only field goals, the Gophers took control and steadily pulled away on a soggy night under the lights at TCF Bank Stadium. The Hoosiers comeback gave hope to what was seemingly a lost cause before hope was harshly dashed yet again.

Week Nine Primer – Minnesota Golden Gophers

What: Indiana Hoosiers (4-4) at Minnesota Golden Gophers (3-4)

Where: TCF Bank Stadium

When: Friday, October 26, 8:00 pm

How to Watch: The game will be broadcast on FS1. You can also listen to the legendary Don Fischer on the radio on any IU Radio Network station.

What’s at Stake: To be blunt, the success or failure of the season likely hangs in the balance on Friday night for both Indiana and Minnesota. The Golden Gophers still have potentially winnable games against Illinois, Purdue, Wisconsin and Northwestern. Beating Indiana gives them four wins and means they just need two of those final four games to go bowling. The Hoosiers are in better shape, with four wins in hand, a victory in Minneapolis places Indiana one victory from bowl eligibility with a matchup at home against Maryland in two weeks. The losing team will be very, very unlikely to make a bowl game this season.

Inside the Numbers: Indiana Looks to Use Rushing Attack To End Losing Streak

Written by Rylie Kyhn

Coming off three straight losses, the Hoosiers need a win this weekend to snap that losing streak and turn things around for the remaining three games of the season, especially if they want to be bowl eligible. They sit at 4-4 on the season and a win this weekend would put them above .500 which could give them the momentum and confidence they need to get at least another win this season. They head to Minneapolis this week to take on the Gophers for their first game under those Friday night lights.

Matchup to Watch: Indiana Defense vs Minnesota Defense

Matchup to Watch: Indiana Defense vs Minnesota Defense

From as early on as when Tom Allen had just been named head coach of Indiana, his wish would be that each game would come down to his defense’s ability to shut down the opponent. “I challenged our defense to be the reason why. I felt like you just get all the negative feedback of ‘Well if the defense would’ve just done this’ or ‘If we could’ve just gotten a stop here,” well I challenged our defense to be the reason why.” Well, this week we may have exactly Coach Allen’s wish: a game that will be decided by the team’s respective defenses, who we have highlighted here in this week’s matchup to watch.

Reakwon Jones Can Smile Again with Family of all Sorts

LEO.

Love. Each. Other.

When Tom Allen took over as head coach in 2017, he was tasked with more than revitalizing a historically poor football program. He needed to change the culture and the mindset of a locker room filled with negativity towards one another. He needed to create an atmosphere where players would always have one another’s back.

He needed to create a family.
