Ohio State Skill Players vs. Indiana’s Back Seven

The Indiana Hoosiers have been oh, so close to beating the Buckeyes for the better part of the last decade, but have yet to get over the hill. Many times, that has been because of the superior speed and depth from the Ohio State skill players compared to the Indiana defense. This year the Hoosiers have built some depth, albeit still young. However, these young players have plenty of playing experience.

Hoosiers Offense Exploded for 52 Points in Win over EIU

Indiana broke a school record for largest margin of victory at Memorial Stadium with a 52-0 beatdown of Eastern Illinois. It was the largest shutout win in 75 years, when Indiana defeated Nebraska 54-0 in 1944. As with most blowouts, the Hoosiers were able to utilize the new transfer rules (allowing a player to appear in four collegiate games and still retain redshirt status). Indiana was able to get their young players some playing time. All three quarterbacks played significant minutes, eight different running backs carried the ball, and a whopping 12 different wide receivers made at least one catch, with 10 guys catching more than one pass. Saturday’s game was exactly what you want to see as an Indiana football fan.

Game 2 Primer – Eastern Illinois

What: Indiana (1-0) vs. Eastern Illinois (0-1)

Where: Memorial Stadium

When: Saturday, September 7 at 3:30

How to Watch: The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network. You can also listen to the game on the IU Radio Network with the legendary Don Fischer on the call.

Series History: This is the first meeting between the two programs.

What’s at Stake: The primary goal for the Indiana Hoosiers in 2019 is to reach a bowl game. That means the Hoosiers need six victories and they must avoid any bad losses. To write the obvious, losing to Eastern Illinois would be a bad loss. EIU has a first-year head coach and they are an FCS program that has struggled to find much success in the past couple of seasons. After the actual outcome, the most important thing for the Hoosiers is to correct the errors and issues from week one as they prepare for the Ohio State Buckeyes on September 14.

Week Thirteen Primer – Purdue Boilermakers

What: Indiana Hoosiers (5-6) vs. Purdue Boilermakers (5-6)

Where: Memorial Stadium

When: Saturday, November 24 at Noon

How to Watch: The game will be broadcast on ESPN2. You can also listen to the legendary Don Fischer on the radio on any IU Radio Network station.

What’s at Stake: The stakes could hardly be bigger as both teams are sitting at 5-6, needing one victory to reach bowl eligibility. In addition, the rivalry between the two schools has heated up recently as the pair have clashed over recruits and Purdue seized the Old Oaken Bucket back a season ago after a few years of Indiana dominance. Tom Allen is 0-1 against Jeff Brohm after last season’s disappointing contest in West Lafayette. Is this Jeff Brohm’s last game as Purdue’s head coach? Can the Hoosiers take the Bucket back and reach their first bowl game of the Tom Allen era?

For the Hoosiers, a Win Over Purdue Would Mean More Than Just the Old Oaken Bucket

For the Hoosiers, a Win Over Purdue Would Mean More Than Just the Old Oaken Bucket

“It burns. It stings. It’s gut-wrenching,” said defensive line coach Mark Hagen.

“There’s no worse feeling than that,” said offensive lineman Wes Martin.

“When you have it, you take it for granted. When you lose it, you realize how special it really was and really is,” added Coach Tom Allen.

They’re not discussing “the one that got away.” Although, they are. It’s just not “the one” that you would expect.

“The one” is The Old Oaken Bucket. And last year, coming into the game just one win shy of a third straight bowl, Indiana left West Lafayette disappointed. Bowl-less, Bucket-less, and forced to spend December at home.
