The Hoosiers are on the road this weekend for the first time in their 2026 campaign. The 1-3 Rutgers Scarlet Knights will await the 4-0 Hoosiers in SHI Stadium. Indiana will seek their second conference win of the season, only this time there won’t be a home crowd behind them. The Hoosiers and the Scarlet Knights are tied at 5-5 in all-time series history. In SHI Stadium, the Hoosiers lead 3-2. Their last contest came in 2023 when Rutgers gained the edge in Memorial Stadium, securing the 31-14 win. However, now coach Curt Cignetti is in control, and everything is on the table. Indiana Football will raise the victory flag against Rutgers if…
Handling the First Road Environment
Saturday will be Indiana’s first road game of the season. They are arriving off of four straight home game wins. The Hoosiers will take on Rutgers at 8:00 pm Saturday, which will naturally draw a large crowd, with big chants and enormous energy. Indiana football will need to block out the noise. They can’t afford to give Rutgers any room for momentum because the crowd will run with it. This will be a difficult task, but it is a necessary one. Navigating Saturday’s hostile environment will pay dividends later this season, when the stakes are even higher.
Rutgers’ lone win came against Howard last weekend, where they dismantled the Bison 58-7. Wins create momentum, and home games bolster that feeling, so there is no doubt the Scarlet Knights will roll in Saturday ready to win.
Containing Rutgers’ Offense
Rutgers’ offense revolves around running back Antwan Raymond and wide receiver KJ Duff. They each receive overwhelmingly more snaps than their fellow teammates at their position. Raymond has totaled 78 attempts on the ground for 438 yards. The next best running back behind him is Clay Thevenin, who has received less than half those numbers, totaling 30 attempts for 133 yards. Similarly, KJ Duff takes first place with 29 attempts for 550 yards and seven touchdowns.
Rutgers as a team is ranked 17th in yards per completion (14.79), and it is clear why. Duff averages an impressive 19.0 yards per reception and 137.5 yards per game. Wide receiver Jourdin Houston competes in a similar fashion, averaging 11.4 yards per play. Clearly, Rutgers’ offense revolves around big plays, and containing Duff early will be essential to keeping Rutgers out of rhythm.
Quarterbacks Dylan Lonergan and AJ Sauce have both seen time on the field over the past three games. However, Lonergan seems to be taking the reins, completing 56.1% of his passes. However, Lonergan’s weakness revolves around his tendency to turn the ball over. Over three games this season, he has totaled five interceptions. Indiana defensive backs Amare Ferrell and Preston Zachman have a perfect opportunity to disrupt Lonergan’s rhythm by forcing turnovers. Overall, Indiana’s secondary will be key in securing the win. If they can restrict big chunk plays, force turnovers, and contain players like Duff, Rutgers will have a difficult time coming out on top.
Lee Beebe Jr. Stepping Up Again
After Indiana running back Turbo Richard went down with an ankle injury against Northwestern, running back Lee Beebe Jr. stepped in and carried the Hoosiers to victory. Although optimism surrounds Richard’s ability to play on Saturday, he is unlikely to be 100%, so Beebe should be ready when called upon.
Without Beebe’s 203 yards on 24 carries and one touchdown last weekend, Indiana’s ability to win against Northwestern would have come into question. Beebe drove the Hoosiers forward, executing plays and putting points on the board. Another explosive Beebe performance would add versatility to the offense and take a load off a recovering Richard.
