Walk-ons are a core part of every college football roster. They provide the team with great depth and tend to be glue guys that you can depend upon in practice. Jeff Utzinger was a walk-on to Indiana football and earned a scholarship in the 2025 offseason. Now, he seeks to be a key contributor to Indiana football.
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 232 pounds
Hometown: Carmel, Indiana
Class/Position: Redshirt Senior/ Linebacker
Jeff Utzinger saw his first collegiate playing time in week one of the 2024 season against FIU. It was there that he recorded his first tackle, while coach Curt Cignetti got his first win in the Cream and Crimson. Utzinger has now appeared in 29 games for the Hoosiers, but has never been a starter.
Last season, he had 16 total tackles for the Hoosiers as they won their first national title. He even recorded two special-teams tackles in the national title game against Miami.
In high school recruiting, Utzinger was a two-star prospect, leaving him to not be recruited by the Hoosiers. He followed his dream of playing for Indiana as a walk-on and made that dream come true. He became the unsung hero of this Indiana football team, which made so many magical things happen in 2025.
Utzinger will likely be a strong special teams performer for Indiana this year, but don’t count him out for being more than just that. He has fought adversity to get this far, so don’t be surprised if he winds up as a starter for Indiana.
The Carmel kid is a heartwarming story that needed to be told.
