Scores From Around the Nation: IUFB Opponent Recap

Written By: Nate Comp (@NathanComp1)

With the entire non-conference slate and one conference game under their belt, the Hoosiers now move into the thick of their Big Ten schedule where things will start to get more difficult. How did the rest of Indiana’s schedule fare as conference games begin to become the norm? Let’s check it out.

Overall Opponent Record Remaining Schedule: 21-9

Maryland (3-1): Last Week Win vs Villanova 38-20

Tai Felton vs D’Angelo Ponds will be a heck of a matchup this week, because Felton continues to start his season on an absolute tear. Saturday, he had a career-high 14 receptions for 157 yards and a touchdown to become the first Maryland player to open a season with four straight games of at least 100 yards receiving. Billy Edwards Jr. had 328 yards and threw for two touchdowns while the Terrapins extended their nonconference winning streak to 15 games, second best in FBS behind only Georgia (24).

Northwestern (2-2): Last Week Loss at Washington 24-5

Five points were all that the Wildcats could muster in Washington’s Big Ten debut as the offensive redzone woes continued. In a two-drive span, the Wildcats ran nine offensive plays inside the Washington four-yard line; they came away with just three points. The defense continues to keep Northwestern in games, allowing just 201 yards and 7 points after initially falling into a 17-0 hole, but the offense does not have enough juice to get them over the hump.

Nebraska (3-1): Last Week Loss vs Illinois 31-24 (OT)

What an awesome game it was for Nebraska and Dylan Raiola – that is, until overtime. In the Cornhuskers’ 400th consecutive sellout, Raiola threw for 297 yards and 3 touchdowns but was unable to continue the magic into the overtime period. Illinois got the ball first and after a two-play touchdown drive for the Illini, the Nebraska offense came on the field and immediately went backwards. They finished the overtime period in defeat and 40 yards shy of a first down.

Washington (3-1): Last Week Win vs Northwestern 24-5

Getting out to a 17-0 lead in the first half surely helped, but it was the defense that ultimately led Jedd Fisch’s Huskies to a victory over Northwestern in their Big Ten debut. Northwestern managed just 112 total yards in the game and also threw two interceptions. Will Rogers tacked on two touchdown passes as well and this game was never in doubt.

Michigan State (3-1): Last Week Loss at Boston College 23-19

The Spartans fell in their final nonconference game during a rainy night in Boston. Aidan Chiles threw three more interceptions, bringing his total to seven on the year, but the young quarterback continues to show moments of greatness doing things that few are capable of. Ultimately, an opening 2nd half kickoff fumble and an interception the next time MSU touched the ball completely shifted momentum and lost them a game they could have won.

Michigan (3-1): Last Week Win vs USC 27-24

Did the Wolverines find their groove yesterday? The offensive line certainly looked better and fueled a dominant ground attack that outrushed the Trojans 290-96. Though Alex Orji’s first start left much to desire in the passing game (7-of-12 for 32 yards), Michigan is okay winning games on the ground with physicality.

Ohio State (3-0): Last Week Win vs Marshall 49-14

TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins totaled 249 yards and four touchdowns on just 20 carries in a dominant Buckeye victory (though it was tied at 7 after the first quarter). The Buckeyes have not yet faced a worthy opponent, but now begin their much harder stretch of a schedule - @Michigan State, Iowa, @Oregon, Nebraska, @Penn State.

Purdue (1-2): Last Week Loss at Oregon State 38-21

Devin Mockobee became just the 14th Boilermaker to surpass 2,000 career rushing yards with his 168-yard and one touchdown performance on Saturday, but the former walk-on was the lone bright spot in Purdue’s second consecutive loss. The Purdue offense is a tough watch at the moment; Hudson Card finished the game 7-of-17 for 56 yards. The Purdue defense allowed 445 yards and lost time of possession 40:15 to 19:45.
