IU Backup QB Dexter Williams Tears ACL
/Written by Matt Smith
Sophomore quarterback Dexter Williams tore his ACL during a non-contact drill last week during the Hoosiers’ spring practice according to head coach Tom Allen in a press conference early on Monday.
Williams didn’t see any playing time during his freshman year, but was expected to get good reps during the spring football season. It was expected for him to get some reps with the first team as well.
“It’s unfortunate and I feel for Dexter and I know he’s disappointed,” said offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan. “But he has faith and trust that there’s a bigger plan and he’s going to come back stronger than ever. Certainly, his development doesn’t stop mentally. Physically, you just have to make sure you’re doing the best you can considering the injury. We’re going to continue to develop Dexter. He’s got a great attitude. He’s got a great heart. He’s a great kid.”
Williams was the number 21 dual-threat quarterback in the 2020 class according to 247sports.
This is a big loss for the Hoosiers due to Michael Penix’s ACL tear that happened in November. Tuttle is the only healthy scholarship quarterback that is at IU right now.
“Jack obviously has taken a bunch of reps and he’s doing a really good job this spring and that has to continue,” said Allen.
Indiana does have four-star quarterback Donovan McCulley coming in for the 2021 season however.
“I don’t like using the word pressure, but I do think this creates the need for him to come in and be able to be ready to go, and I have full confidence that he will,” said Allen. “I’m excited for him and the opportunity that this would create.”
As for moving forward in spring ball, the Hoosiers have three walk-on quarterbacks that are able to take reps for the team and have been participating in the scrimmages that have been held at practice.
Allen was asked about the Hoosiers looking into the transfer portal for more depth at the quarterback position, but with the walk on players and the hope that Penix’s recovery continues on schedule, that the Hoosiers will have enough depth at the position.
The Hoosiers only have nine more spring practices left, including the spring game which will highlight Tuttle and the walk-on players.
