Five Takeaways From Indiana's Win Over Connecticut
/Written by Andrew Walker
The Indiana Hoosiers got it done in style against the UConn Huskies, 38-3. The Hoosiers took care of business behind backup QB Peyton Ramsey’s arm and the RB squad’s efforts on the ground. Let’s take a look at my five takeaways from Saturday’s game.
1. Peyton Ramsey looked like he could lead an offense
Given the talent, or lack thereof, of the UConn defense, Ramsey put on a show today. The backup QB completed 23/27 for 247 yards, three TDs and one interception. It’s safe to say that Ramsey was able to be the offensive catalyst for the Hoosiers on Saturday. I don’t think that changes anyone’s decision on what will happen when Penix is finally healthy.
2. Running attack was effective
Stevie Scott and Sampson James spearheaded the Hoosiers’ ground game today, helping Indiana reach 178 total yards on the ground against the Huskies. It just goes to show what a balanced offense can do for your team. The Hoosiers amassed 430 total yards of offense compared to UConn’s 145.
3. Defense came up big
When your defensive squad comes up with six TFL’s on the day, two of those being sacks. As I mentioned before, Indiana held UConn’s offense to 145 total yards. This was huge for Indiana, partly because of the amount of yards and points they let go last weekend. It’s always good to bounce back like that the next weekend.
4. Cam Jones played out of his mind
Cam Jones is an outrageous defensive force for the Hoosiers. Jones was responsible for a pick-six for the Indiana defense, having the presence of mind to completely jump the receiver on the line of scrimmage speaks to how smart of a player he is. Add that to 4 total tackles and one TFL, and you’ve got a heck of a day.
5. Red Zone opportunities
The Hoosiers were able to do exactly what I pointed out in my Inside the Numbers article on Friday. Indiana needed to be able to take advantage of the opportunities inside the red zone. On Saturday, they did just that. 5-5 on red zone scores is exactly what Indiana needs to be able to do to have success for the rest of the season. Being able to finish a drive makes all that effort worth it.
