#52

There are now only 52 days remaining until the Indiana Hoosiers begin the 2015 season against the Salukis of Southern Illinois. That means our countdown is now focused on #52, redshirt junior linebacker Tyler Burgett.

  • Tyler Burgett
  • -Height: 6’0”
  • -Weight: 230 pounds
  • -Hometown: Sarasota, FL (Out-of-Door Academy)
  • -Year/Position: RS Junior/LB

Tyler Burgett, a 6-foot linebacker from Sarasota, Florida, came to IU after playing linebacker and fullback at Out-of-Door Academy (a private school with about 300 students). Burgett also earned varsity letters for basketball (3 years) and lacrosse (one year). Burgett excelled for the Thunder, leading the team in tackles and interceptions and earning honorable mention all-state honors after being a two-time team captain. Upon choosing IU, Burgett told reporters that he wanted “the opportunity to play for a Big Ten school, which will not only provide the athletic experience I am looking for but also a great education.” Interestingly, Burgett is originally from Indianapolis so he has a previous connection to the Hoosier state.

Burgett redshirted the 2012 season and was named the scout team player of the week for the Purdue game. He was named scout team player of the week during preparation for the Navy game in 2013 and scout team player of the week for the Michigan game during the 2014 season. Now a redshirt junior, Burgett has yet to see game action in an IU uniform. He doesn’t appear to figure into the linebacker rotation but it’s very possible that he’ll work his way onto the special teams coverage units for the 2015 season. Whether he sees game time or not, consistent players on the scout team are a valuable part of the program and Burgett’s contributions aren’t irrelevant.

The Hoosier Huddle Countdown continues as we near the midway point! Tomorrow will be a look at #51. Come back for that and much more coverage as Hoosier Huddle keeps on bringing you terrific preseason coverage.
