We move closer to kickoff and today look at former Hoosier quarterback Ben Chappell who played for the Hoosiers from 2006 until 2010. Chappell is a Bloomington native and starred at Bloomington South before moving up the road to IU.
The big armed quarterback took over the starting job from Kellen Lewis in 2008 after a redshirt year in 2006 and spending the 2007 season as Lewis’s backup. In 2008 Chappell threw for 1,001 yards and four touchdowns in 11 games. He really came on in 2009 when he was named team captain as a junior. He threw for 2,941 yards and 17 touchdowns earning an All-Big Ten honorable mention.
Chappell saved his best for last as he once again earned All-Big Ten honorable mention. He threw for 3,295 yards and 24 touchdowns. He finished his Hoosier career off with a gutty performance in an overtime win at Purdue. Chappell closed out his career as IU's career leader in completion percentage (61.1), completions (651), attempts (1,066), 300-yard games (nine), 250-yard games (13) and 200-yard games (18), ranked second in passing yardage (7,251) and passing touchdowns (45), and finished third in total offense (7,331).
