Hoosiers Relying on Fundamentals against Penn State

Written by Matt Smith
The Hoosiers travel to Happy Valley this weekend to take on the number four ranked Nittany Lions. Penn State has called this game the stripe game which means Beaver Stadium will be packed and the fans will be loud.
Last year the Hoosiers upset Penn State at home in the season opener when Michael Penix converted on his infamous dive for the two point conversion. So, it is to be expected that the Nittany Lions want revenge on IU.
One obstacle that the Hoosiers are going to face is the crowd noise at Beaver Stadium.
Matchup to Watch: Hoosiers Secondary Needs to Stop Penn State’s Explosive Receiving Corps

Written by Evan Orris
The Hoosiers secondary was torched for over 365 passing yards by Bailey Zappe and the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers last week. This upcoming week the task will be even harder as IU takes on the Penn State Nittany Lions and their two stud receivers.
Keys for an Indiana Upset over No. 4 Penn State

Last weekend, the Hoosiers got back on track, traveling two hours south, beating Western Kentucky 33-31 on their historic “Black Out” crowd. It was not an easy win, but there were many positives and some critical injuries that are something to keep an eye on going into this week’s game. IU falls to 2-2 on the season while they will now travel east to Penn State to take on the #4 ranked team in the country. The game will take place on national television at 7:30 pm on ABC. Both teams will have a lot to play for. Last year IU pulled off the upset against the Nifty Lions, so you rest assured they will want payback. On the other hand, the Hoosiers will look to prove people wrong. After losing to Cincinnati and Iowa, many have counted out this up-and-coming program. Many have left Indiana out of their current bowl projections, which will only provide more motivation. Now with said, let’s dive into keys for the Hoosiers to pull off an upset against Penn State.

Game Wrap and Reaction: Indiana 36 No. 8 Penn State 35

Opponent: Penn State Nittany Lions
Location: Saturday, October 24, 2020
Why They Played: The Hoosiers and Nittany Lions played as divisional foes to open up the 2020 season.
What The Game Meant: In a short season with no non-conference games, a win could propel either team to a special season. For the Hoosiers, the win is the first time they beat a top-10 team since 1987 and the first time at home doing that since 1967. Tom Allen checked boxes last season and just checked a big one off the list on Saturday.
Key Takeaways, Missed Field Goals Help Defense in IU’s Upset Win over No. 8 Penn State

Written by Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)
The Indiana Hoosiers scored their most impressive victory since 1987 with their thrilling 36-35 overtime victory over the eighth ranked Penn State Nittany Lions. The Hoosiers defense bent, but didn’t break early and it wasn’t until the Nittany Lions scored 14 points in 48 seconds did the defense bust. However, three takeaways, three missed Nittany Lion field goals and a fourth down stop was enough to keep the Hoosiers in the game.

Series History: The Penn State Nittany Lions have won 22 out of 23 matchups in the one-sided history between the two schools. The Nittany Lions have won six in a row but the last two contests have been incredibly close.
What the Hoosier Defense Needs to do to Slow Down Penn State

Written by Amanda Pavelka (@amandapavelka3)
In a season of strange circumstances, the Indiana Hoosiers will enter a Memorial Stadium with empty stands on Saturday to face off the No. 8 football team in the nation, the Penn State Nittany Lions. The Hoosiers have a legitimate chance to beat Penn State for what would be the second time in the history of the program, but only if they follow these keys on defense.
